Importing a 2001 XT to the USA

Due to a family emergency, i must cut short my south american travels and return to the US. I would like to ship my Chilean bought 2001XT back to America, but was wondering if anyone out there knew about safety/emission standards that might set me back big bucks upon my return. I only have 5 more days to decide, so if anyone knows about problems/ease of importing this bike to the USA, i would be very very thankful.

Is there no way you could ride it back? Might even be quicker than any other way to get home, depending on where you are...

Sorry for the emergency - hope everything turns out OK mate.

Unfortunately i am in la paz bolivia and need to be in Houston, Texas ASAP (my dad is in a hospital there!). Riding back isn´t going to happen, but maybe storing it in Lima??????

sorry to read about your dad, I am to far north to help you - in medellin with the tenere engine in parts - but to store the bike in Lima is a good idea. Try the South American Explorers Club in Miraflores, Lima - for safe storage - I know that a dutch biker has stored his Tenere there. I will coming down south to Lima in a few weeks, send me an email if you need help

ben
walter nosiglia, the honda dealer in la paz normally lets people store their bikes for free at his dealership. when i was there in 2000 werner zwick's transalp and eric and gail haw's bmw were there. he is a really cool fellow, but only speaks spanish. you will recognise him: looks like chuck norris' twin http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif

you can find his address on the HU site somewhere, i'm sure. (do a search).

the place is very tricky to find. i suggest you pay a taxi driver (check he knows the way first!) and follow him. it is quite a way (down hill) from where the gringos hang out...

With thanks to many out there (especially Ricardo R.) I put my bike in Walter´s shop in La Paz early this week...Great idea Chris! His buddy Hernando took good care of me as Walter himself wasn´t there. Thanks for all the info I got as a response to my post. I will be able to come back to SA and continue my journey in due time. Thanks again to everyone.
