Not sure if these are available in the UK, but you can buy them from Norway - or alternatively: I can buy them for you and ship them to you in Scotland.

These studs are pretty popular among Norwegian winter riders. They are to be screwn into you knobbly tire with a special tool (included), and they sticks there even if you ride down the occasional bare asphalt road. They are made of extremely hard metal so you can actually un-screw them when spring comes and re-use them next winter. Price is ca 100 GBP for 200 studs.

They come in a variety of sizes, 13 mm being the most suitable (best compromise, rather) for all-round motorcycle purposes, I'd say. Too long, and it won't be possible to ride on asphalt. Only in really deep snow will the 13 mm's loose their grip.

Hope this helps. The studs are called Maxi Grip and are sold through a wholesaler specialized on products for farmers. Maybe you can find something similar in Scotland?

Will you ride on the road? The UK police take a dim view of studs and will threaten you with things like riding with no insurance/illegal tyres etc. Basic knobblies work ok on fresh snow while chains are 100% legal so long as there is a reason to use them. Car chains for 15" tyres are usually the right length and can be adapted to fit, so there are alternatives.

Studs are of course the best answer, but there are reasons no one in the UK is selling them.

This site have a selection of studded tyres:

Motorcycle tyres - online shop -

The ones I have seen are 4.00-19s Heidenau K37s with studs, for my outfit, but I'm sure there are others. Just put in your sizes and see what comes up.

They ship to the UK: very quick, very reasonable price. All you need to do is fit them.

You can get them online at www.maxigripstore.com and they ship to the UK.

Probably the best ice studs available on the market. I'm pretty sure that they are now legal on smaller vehicule as the new generation of studs are a lot less invasive on surfaces.
