forks

hi Guys! new to this but here goes...
got an xt 600e 94 and the forks are fixed about an inch from the top, is it suposed to be like that or was it done by the previous owner to "lower" it?? please help!! thanks

Hi !

Mines an `02 xt600e, and my forks are showing the just the nut depth at the top of the yoke. If that makes sense ?

i have a '93 and the spec is supposed to be flush with the line where the fork tube and cap meet all the way to the top so that just the cap shows off the top

The last owner was probably a short arse...

Like others said, only the top 'cap' should be showing. About 5mm or so.

You might want to check your rear shock and linkages too. They might have been changed to match the front.

if you loosen the ring nut on the top of the spring it will expand the spring making the bike lift but it can get fairly specific to its rider but if youd like you can let off on the ring nut until you reach a comfortable height, or check on the specific sequence on setting rider height preferances, that is granted the person before you didnt change out the spring to suit their preferance.

No one yet has mentioned that dropping the forks up through the triple clamps will alter the steering in so much that it will bring about a change on the corners. Effectivly making the steering sharper/quicker. Not seen it done by a whole inch though.

Google something like "Droping front forks"

yes socks that is true but im basing my answers on the fact that he only has limited knowledge at that if the front and rear are not set "together" on such methods of lowering the front than such results do not occur. also an inch is quite a bit overkill for that

This is a common 'quick fix' if you have too much luggage on your bike with a too soft spring. It helps to bring the weight back down on the front.

However, when you ride without the luggage, it's all over the place.

its true, very limited knowledge and all advice is greatfull.
Just put the front forks flush, now I just need to sort out the preload on the rear spring.

have not yet tested to see the diff but am looking forward to it.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
