Noisy top ends can be caused by a few different things:
excessive valve lash. its an easy fix but remember " a slappy valve is a happy valve".
Secondly a loose camchain can be quite noisy, again usually an easy fix, the xt's have auto cam adjusters that sometimes must be coaxed a little if the bike has mucho miles on it. ( the procedure has been described in several posts here , search the archive)
the loudest noises can come from the cross pin bearings ( connects piston to con rod) when they go bad , its rare but verrrry noisy.

so.. check the easy things first valves, cam chain. Check that you have no air leaks where the carb connects to the head ( spray some wd 40 while the bike idles, if the revs go up you got a leaker).. if its a leaker the lean condition can cause some noises , check plug to verify.
Hope this has been somewhat useful
Best of luck!

i have recently experienced loud top end noise and the motor is completly rebuilt ,my noise was coming from the cam cover being loose ,or rocker cover because the threads for the bolts were stripped causing the cam to slap around .
