Help Oil Pump Advice Needed

Hi Klaus and all riders.
Pull the Top end off my 34L Tenere last night and the clacking sound was a result of one badly trashed Big end bearing. The crank ends around the pin are bluish in colour so I figure it didn't get enough lubrication.
Anyway before I rebuild it I want to get the double haul oil pump. What was the first model of Tenere AND normal XT600 that used this?. Will a normal XT600 oil pump fit in the 34L Tenere?

And also when I ask for the part from a wrecker what do I ask for besides the oil pump ie is there are sprocket and o-rings aswell?.

Thankyou for your assistance

Rgds
Doug

hi doug,
are you sure there was enough oil in the engine?
anyway, since very long time yamaha doesn't sell 34L oil pumps anymore.
the only oil pumps available are the 1VJ pump and the 3AJ pump.
the feed side rotor thickness and hence the hauling capacity has developed from 4 mm (34L) to 6 mm (1VJ) to 8 mm (3AJ).
scavenger side rotor thickness is always 18 mm.
every pump is coded with 5Y1 on the bottom and a) no code (34L) b) 1VJ c) 3AJ on top.
there are also three different shafts:
34L: one groove (for circlip)
1VJ: two grooves
3AJ: three grooves
34L shaft and 1VJ shaft have equal length, only the drive pin hole position is different (because different thickness of rotor). therefore both pumps use the same sprocket.
3AJ shaft is longer and therefore requires a different sprocket (with code 3AJ).
yamaha advises to use the 1VJ pump for the following models: 34L, 55W, 43F, 1VJ, 2KF, 2NF, 59X(TT600).
3AJ pump should be used in 3AJ, 3TB, 4PT, DJ02 (generally every xt600 model since 1989 (tenere) resp. 1990 and also the later tt600 models).
nevertheless it is possible to mount the 3AJ pump in a 34L engine.
i would use the 1VJ pump for a 34L.
beside the pump you need two new o-rings and a paper gasket (to be mount between pump and housing). if you choose the 3AJ pump you need also the 3AJ sprocket.

hope this helps,
regards
klaus

Thankyou for your informative reply Klaus. From your advice I think I will go with the 1vj oil pump.
couple of questions.
1) when I look at the parts microfiche for the 1vj model there is no oil pump gasket? Does the modification definetely require a gasket?
2) A new oil pump is around $250 Australian. Is there any chance you would be able to sell me a second hand 1vj unit or would I be better off buying a new unit in the sense that a second hand unit could be worn or is this able to be tested?.

Thanks again for your help

Cheers
Doug

1)
it will function also without paper gasket.
as far as i know that gasket is added with the 3AJ pump. don't know wether it is available as a single part.
2)
i have second hand one, but not in a condition that i would sell.
all used pumps i have seen up to now have exceeded the specified wear limit. they will function, of course, but not as good as a new one, especially when oil becomes hot and thinner.
try here:

it seems that some parts are much cheaper in usa.

Hi Klaus,

I just dismounted to oilpump from my 1vj to put a 3aj model inside and I also found out that there was not paper gasket in mine...

Do you know why they advise to put a 1VJ in a 34L motor and why not a 3aj, because I would have thought that there was only benefit of putting the newest one with the biggest output.

Vv

Not sure if Klaus will be listening, hasn't posted since 2006 and the thread is 13 years since previous reply.

You should put the 3AJ pump in if your can over the 1VJ pump. However if you don't have one , the 1VJ pump is a step better than the 34L .
