Help!- Any suggestions ? 87 xt600

Hi, Very dissapointing day here.. I just spent $600 to this guy who supposedly went through the whole bottom and top end with gaskets and fixing my head gasket leak. It's an 87 xt600 I went out for a ride today and it seemed to have considerably less power. I went out on the rode and it wouldn't go past 55mph and then it started to sputter out, i pulled off and the thing shut off and at the end it had a metal rattle like the piston was loose or something. I'm not mechanical so i dont know anything about this thing. All i know is i had to walk it home a couple of miles and the bike doesnt have any compression and still makes that rattle sound when you try to start it. Does anyone have any ideas on what this is? I'm going to have to call that mechanic tomorrow and tell him about it! Thanks- Clay

Bad Day

Did you talk to any of his former customers? Take the bike back to him and have him tear it apart while you wait and see what is wrong. I am amazed how many people take their bikes and money to people who they know very little about. That said any mechanical device can fail, especialy a 20 year old motorcycle. Let me know how this comes out, I would be glad to give you a opinion. Bill in montana, 30 years experience certified yamaha mechanic.

Sounds like a stuck valve. The decompression cable might not have been adjusted correctly and caused a problem in the valve train.
