help 34k barrel

Can anyone help i need a 34k barrel to fit a 1vj 86/87 tenere, but it must not of been reboored more than the 3rd standard oversize as i all ready have a new piston,also it must have good threads in the top or good hellycoils,At the moment i have a badly damaged barrel, after a local engineer tryed to replace a bad thread, one of the cylinder head bolt holes is now so big i can get my finger in it.So after 3 months of work on the bike i'am still stuck in good old USA. any help please. cheers Skip

Pete has had a genuine run of bad luck with his tenere in the US, can we do something to help him as we ourselves would like to be helped in a similar situation?

Looking for a 3AJ barrel I ran across an XT600 barrel at a breakers. I think it is marked 2KF. It is used, don't know at what size it is drilled now.
Price would be, I think around 120 EUR.
It is in Holland, should be possible to get it to UK or US directly.

I will visit those breakers again on Friday so coul pick it up. Pls advise.

Thanks for the quick reply, i've been told that i can't use a 2kf barrel as i would then have to change the head and camcover to match this barrel,The 2kf is off of a late 90's engine, my is 86/87 and i'am not to sure if there is any thing i can use instead of a 34k that will go with the 1vj bottom end and 1vj head and camcover, as i said to Barry i've rebuilt the bottom end and the head completely so i'd like to really try and find a 34k barrel so i won't have to change any thing to fit it. 2kf barrels are marked 34K01 (87) or 3AJ00 (87...89)
cylinder head 34L does not fit on barrels after 86! cylinder head must be 2KF
there is also a 1VJ cylinder head which already has bigger valves, but is fixed with only 5 screws to barrel (after: 6 screws, also head gasket is different therefore)
3AJ barrel is much better than 34K0x since the cooling fins are bigger.

what diameter is the bad hole?
if it's not too big, the barrel might be rescued.

ensat fasteners are the real solution, not comparable with helicoil etc. and, if fitted correctly, better than original.
it should be possible to get this in u.s.
if you mail kerbkonus they should be able to name a distributor in u.s.
or a good mechanic can prepare something like this for you.
maybe easier than to search for another barrel.

Now i'am a bit confused, i know i must sound a bit silly but does that mean that with my 1vj bottom end and 1vj head with 6 bolts that any barrel with 34k or 3AJ00 or 2kf will fit ?
The problem with the old barrel was i had it rebored and noticed one of the hellicoils was not to good so i took it to an engineer who said he could redrill it and fit a new hellycoil but instead he made a hole that i can now get a finger in, he said there was now not to much he could do with it. cheers skip.

sorry to deviate the thread but could some one explain how and what helicoils are and how they are used ..much appreciated ,phil.

A hellycoil is a steel thread that you insert into a bolthole with damaged thread, some types are glued in or screwed in to the old thread and some the hole is drilled oversize and the new steel thread is screwed into the hole, allowing you to use the original bolt.There are other ways of repairing the thread as well, see the previous message from Klaus.

please check your barrel, the code is stamped on the left hand side bottom. it should be something 34Kxx and then 595cm³.
as far as i now there is no barrel with code 1VJ.
34K01 barrel was used in 1VJ 1986 together with cylinder head coded 1VJ. the head gasket has 5 bolt holes.
because of the well-known overheat troubles in 1VJ engines, yamaha came up with the 34K02 barrel in 1987 (which made troubles even worser than before), again with 1VJ head.
than, in late 1987, yamaha introduced the 34K03 (also with 1VJ head). this one was o.k. because of longer threads for head bolts.
the xt600 2KF model which came on market in 1987 was also equipped with 34Kxx / 1VJ.
then in 1988 both tenere 3AJ and 2KF where equipped with the advanced 3AJ00 barrel and the 2KF head. from that day on untill nowadays every xt600 is equipped with this barrel and head.
it must be stated that every barrel fits every bottom end, you only have to take care about the barrel / head combination. so, 2KF head will fit only on 3AJ00 barrel while 1VJ or 34L head both will fit on 34Kxx.
the difference between 1VJ and 34L head is the smaller valve diameter of the latter.
the difference between 1VJ and 2KF head is the 6 bolt fixing of the latter plus the bigger distance between the two downwards facing fixing M8 bolts (in cylinder head).

p.s.: helicoil is a good solution for damaged threads, but it won't last very long when used for cylinder head bolds. forces are too big there

The barrel is marked 34K, no indication of 01, 02, 03. Holes for threads look OK.
Further, the price for the entire barrel is 75 EURO, I had no way of telling at what size it has been drilled now.
Another solution, this shop has a lot of loose liners, taken out of barrels to make 660 cc cilinders. The liners are left overs. Price is 50 EURO, saves on shipping costs. Then, you should drill it to the size you want after you have put it back into your barrel.
This liner replacement is fairly easy, by heating the alloy part you can easily tap out the liner, assembly is vice versa making sure the top of the liner aligns with top of barrel. Let me know.
Of course, this only works when you still have the barrel.
