Heavy Throttle
 

From new my 2002 XT has had a heavy throttle operation,even the 1100 BMW I hired for a few weeks in December was a lot lighter,on a long-ish trip this can even be quite painful,is this a trait of the XT or something I can sort out quite easily?

so your wrist gets sore...if so get one of those throttle jockey things, clips onto the throttle grip and you can use the palm of your hand to keep the power on, good for long distances...stops your fingers from going to sleep.aerostitch sells them online.
i hope that is what you meant....

Lube the pivot points on the carb (where the cable attaches). Lube the cables. Make sure handguards etc are not pressing against the twist grip (and stopping its' movement). Also check the cable(s) for kinks or unnecessary tight bends.

If I remember right you said your previous bike was a VFR.
I don't find the XT much heavier than my previous bikes, but there has been a few years of a gap in having a bike that works and on the road! The XT does expose you to the full effect of the wind hurtling past as you zip along, this tends to make you grip the throttle much tighter than you would on your VFR. The added vibration can also take it's toll on your right hand until you get used to varying your grip on long haul runs.

No Gullman it was another Dave had the VFR but you could be right about the heavy grip due to wind-pressure,hadn`t thought about that.The other replies,well I`ve had the same problem from new and it`s been serviced 3 times since and I`ve checked everything relevent myself,I have seen the cruise-control contraptions mentioned and they`re definately worth a look,thanks to all 3 of you.

My 660 has a two-finger operated super-easy throttle. Just spray some silicones between the nylon throttle bush and the handlebar and put everything back together nicely.
