Fuel leaking from the carb

Hi,
Quick question. I've got an MZ enduro, but it's got an XT660 motor. I had the fuel tank off yesterday (easier to change the oil), and when I put it back on and set the fuel tap to on petrol started leaking (a quick drip) from an overflow pipe leading off the carb. I switched the tap off, and the drip stopped, switched it back to on and the drips started again. After running the bike for about 10 minutes the drips stopped.
It's ok now, but can someone explain why fuel was dripping?

Cheers.

probably the float needle valve was open. maybe some piece of dirt has blocked it.
place a fuel filter in the fuel line, this can prevent lots of carb trouble.

Hmm...I wonder if a bit of dirt got onto the fuel tap nozzle (with the tank on the bench), which got into the fuel flow to the carb and caused the problem?

Sounds plausable. Thanks for the speedy reply.

Cheers.
