Front brake problem
 

Hi all,

I am having problems with front brake judder on my 1990 3AJ Tenere.
When I apply the front brake I get a sensation like I am squeezing the front brake lever, then releasing the lever, then squeezing again etc. This is more obvious at lower speeds and I don’t feel a pulsing through the lever.

I assumed that this was because the front disc had warped and swapped on the disc from a spare wheel and this problem seemed to reduce significantly, but not disappear. It has now got as bad as it ever was.

I am now wondering if anything else could be causing this, or if the combination of Yamaha disc and EBC pads are leading to pad material transferring to the disc and causing this problem. Any thoughts appreciated.

If I do replace the disc and pads, can you recommend any combinations that won’t ware out the disc quickly and won’t cause this problem?

sounds like the replacement disk has some warpage too.
the calipers on these bikes are the slide type with pistons on 1 side.

so strip the caliper and check the slide movement is not sticking causing over heating of the disk and/or uneven pad wear.

the pad choice depends on what you do with the bike if its a lot of dirt use you need a different pad than a heavy road use bike.

hi there as wolfzero says it sounds like a warped disc , you can check this by taping a pointer to the fork leg and spining the wheel. i would strip and rebuild the caliper , pistons and seals out and clean it all carefully , if its a sliding caliper on your modal clean and copper slip the sliders etc . a free caliper is a must for a good working brake . zigzag

On cars I've found occasionally new discs will work o.k. for a while then start to judder again, this is because of warped hubs. I suppose it could be the same on bikes.
Even on push bikes this can be a problem leading people to spend on floating discs - funny comparing their 25lb mountainbikes with my lump of a Tenere and the difference in speeds.
