Smile Front brake identification help needed

Hello all,

Can anyone give me a clue as to what I need to look for re: my front brakes.

I have a Tenere 34L that I am rebuilding. During conversations with David Lambeth, he advised that a simple upgrade re braking would be a good idea and to drop a 4PT front end in if possible.

As I happened to have a set of 4PT forks kicking around I popped them into the stanchions… no problem there.

The problem I have encountered is with the brake caliper. I thought I had a 4PT front caliper (twin piston) but the carrier just doesn't fit. It appears to be 103-104mm between centre holes for the carrier but the forks require 100mm (maybe 101mm but I am guessing 100mm would be the logical choice) between centre holes.

Anyone got any idea as to which caliper and hanger I might have as I have rebuilt the brakes and it might be easier/cheaper to change the forks to this model - whichever it is? Would a 3TB be right?

Also, if I decided to scrap this approach and go back to the original 34L set up, can someone advise the easiest way to separate the caliper from the carrier? Does it just push on / pull off as mine seems set solid?

Also, would I be able to use the 34L wheel and brake disc with the 4PT (or 3TB) forks or do I need both of these from the 4PT?

All these model identification makes life so bloody difficult!

Thanks in advance

Andy

The 3TB and 4PT calipers are to all intents and purposes the same and both mount on 100mm centres (I've just been out and measured!)

You will need to use the 4PT disc because it's bigger but it uses M8 fasteners, the 3TB and maybe earlier uses M6. You will need to either drill and tap the hub to M8 or use some kind of collar to take up the extra diameter if you use the M6.

I've got all the various bits in the garage waiting to do a similar swap myself so if you want any extra info just ask.

Regards - Alastair.
