Hi Matt

Sorry to hear about your broken 5th gear.
How many kilometers is your tenere indicating now?
If it is less than 50 000 Kms I think its not normal.

The thing is that if you ride to slowly in the revs, the gear gets bombarded by torque unfairly distributed and not around all the wheel, some teeth will get like punched by a hammer.
When you drive faster revs, gear is spinning faster, torque is still strong, though it is not hammering the wheel, more inerty if that is how its called in english.

Keep above 4000 and even better above 4500 and gear won't get hammered.
Me, I drive 4th gear until 110 km/h then I only put in 5th and never below 4500tr/min.

Hope it helps.

Cheers

Matt

It only shows 44,000 kms and is in very good condition, I guess it could also be a bearing of some kind... the garage have had it two week now and not even had chance to look - so its not looking promising.

Friday 13th lucky for some unlucky for others...... just been told my bike is ready. It's not the gearbox but a shot sprocket and chain .......

Thanks Matt for the advise on 5th gear use, I'll make sure 5th is only for 4000 rpm and above..

Many thanks
Matt

Hi to both Matts,

The 3AJ is meant to have the hardened 5th gear which "solves" the problem. I know there is a Series 1 and Series 2 version, but I thought the "fix" was applied to both original versions?

If this is the case, then you should not experience the 5th gear problem with a 3AJ Tenere. (I hope this is correct as I have a Series 1 myself).

Ciao, Geoff

Hi Geoff

You can experience if you drive to low in revs or if bike is very loaded.
I havn't though experienced anything yet, only a blown chain.

Cheers

Matt
