Engine swap TT600 or XT600E Engine into old XT600 2KF? Doable?

I am the proud owner of a 1989 Yamaha XT600 2KF unfortunately it is Kickstart Only and My knee is not what it once was. I Want electric start!

Is it possible to retro fit the engine from a TT600 or an XT600E into my bike?

Ie will it fit straight in? I know I will have to mess with electrics, poss bigger battery, starter solenoid, starter switch etc.

What about the Oil Tank on the XT 2KF? do I keep it? Junk it? is the TT or 600E self contained? or am I opening up a big ole' Can of worms here?

Any help MUCH appreciated.

Bad news

There are / have been two types of Tenere / XT / TT engines. The ones with kickstart and the ones with E-start. The E-start variant is wider, so if you have a kickstart frame, a straight fit it will not be.
Then, you will need to add the starting circuit: larger battery, switches, etc. Not easy to find room for the larger battery.
The oil tank you should keep; all XT engine have dry sump, so need some kind of reservoir. In the newer XT models it is located in the front frame tube.

So, bad news. Find someone who wants a kickstart only and swap for his E-start?

Good luck!

I did it the other way - fitted a kick start 1988 2KF into my 1992 XT600E.I had the complete bike,so just swapped CDI and rec/reg over with wiring. You will need to do the CDI and rec/reg swap too,so you need to get those off the donor.Everything else is the same,I just have redundant electric start wiring.....but the original motor will be going back in at some stage.
