engine identification

Hello, i'm new to this forum, i've been rebuilding a 1984 xt600 for the last 4-5 years, I decided to fit an electric start engine which I had off ebay some years ago, I think its a 3aj engine the problem being the engine number is missing, [ did'nt think to ask or check until I came to fit recently ] it has 2kf on the head, no decompression cable or rev counter drive, no kick start and is the newer silver grey colour, could anyone tell me if there are any othe id marks on the engine or approx year it came from, the problem I have is i've fitted the newer wiring loom, cdi etc have cleaned the carbs and checked i've got a spark but the engine won't start, it turns over well seems to be plenty of compression but all I get is a lot of back firing out of the exhaust, which points to fuel getting through and a spark, can the timing be out or altered? I've checked the part number for the cdi unit and there seems to be only 1 type to fit between 90-95, the I had came with the loom.

Thanks for help in advance Mike

I'd stop what you're doing as the electric start engine isn't compatable with the early frames. I know this as I found out to my cost when I tried it. David Lampeth also confirmed this (he knows everything and more about XT600's).
The problem is the sprocket on the engine is about 10mm further out than your old engine and the chain will foul on the frame.:oops2:

What's wrong with your old engine anyway?
I'll add it to my collection if you don't want it.:confused1:

thanks Tom, thats probably the one thing I have'nt checked, the original engine has a noisey 5th gear and my knee is'nt up to kicking it over, can anyone still tell me the identity of this engine?

Thanks Mike:(
