Empty tank, then?

Hi, my TTR 600 now uses twice the fuel per km that it used to. The bike will not accelerate with more than about half throttle applied. I found this out at 80kph when there was no more speed to come.
I had just run the Acerbis tank empty to guage range and consumption rate, added my 3l spare tank then put 10l in at a fuel station. It ran onto reserve at 90km! I'd expected to get 180km.
I'm guessing this could be the float jammed in the carburettor but what else might cause these symptoms please? Ciao, Lindsay.

definately sounds like a breathing problem, clean and re oil your filter and clean out your jets in the carb, even the air jets and atmospheric pressure ports

That and... Make sure the fuel doesn leek into the engine and mixes with the oil.

As the previous posters estimated, check your air filter. Another problem could be valves, so a compression test would not go astray.

Check the easy stuff first, you obviously have spark, so don't worry about electrical stuff at this stage, just air, fuel, and then mixture of the 2.

Thanks for the guidance. I'll check all that was mentioned. I notice the choke button doesn't go totally home, leaving a short length of shaft visible. I don't know if it was like this before though. Ciao, Lindsay.

Check the colour of the plug, I believe this could be choke problem, you have already stated about the choke, I'd try there first.

The choke shaft on my TT600RE leaves about 30mm showing when fully in if that's any help.

Yup - easy stuff as above, then look at valve clearance, seats, pistons & rings in that order...

That was it.

Thanks for the help. It turned out to be dirt, almost dust, in the carb. I'm shocked to find such a huge increase in fuel consumption can occur and go unnoticed. Wow. The choke clearance seems to be as it should be. Service back to normal. Lindsay.

have you checked the fuel consumption since cleaning out the carb?
I hope that was the problem.

Tank Range.

Hi, I'm no mechanic and my right hand is badly swollen and a big nuisance. After filling up to full 20l and riding normally the bike's done 280km and not onto reserve, so it's back to normal. I've really no idea why the consumption shot up. Sorry, but that doesn't help anyone. Lindsay.
