Electrical Gremlins
 

Hey guys n gals. I had a previous post about my electrical gremlins, and just wanted to post again.

I have checked every ground I could find, pulled apart all the plugs, and I still cannot figure my problem out. Wiring harness looks fine as well.

I have a 1984 xt 600 and I just cant seem to get the electrical components to work right. I swapped in an engine from a 87 or 88 xt600, and all the electrical plugged right in.

1. First off is the neutral light. When i dont have a battery in, it kinda works, but stays on sometimes when its in gear. When I have a battery in the nuteral light stays on all the time.

2. When I have a battery in the headlights work awesome, but when I dont have a battery in, its pretty dim. (not sure if this is a problem or not)

3. The tail light doesnt light up with or without the battery installed and the bike running(I installed a brand new led bulb) but the brake light works with both the front and rear brakes.

4. Last is my signal lights. I bought some LED and installed them, and all four come on when I turn the switch to either the left or the right, when I dont have a battery in, and when I have a battery in.
I used the same flasher as stock, so that may be the problem there?

Anyways i could really use some tips and advice, as I am trying to get this bike ready for a safety, so I can legally ride it on the road!

There are two types of STOCK turn signals.
One of them, which is the same ones I had on my XT stay on all 4 at all the time and also blink. These have Dual filament bulbs and three wires come out of it!

The other type has one filament bulbs and only two wires come out of them!

Which type were your stock turn signals?


If you have the 3wires ones you might've plugged in the wrong combination!

Still, you need a special LED flasher relay or they won't flash as they don't draw enough power from the flasher to trigger it and so, they always stay on!

Did you buy the correct taillight?

Those LED taillights have either two series of leds, one for presence and the other for the brake lights or another way that right now I can't remember... OR they actually only work as brake lights.

The thing is, you should also have 3 wires coming out of that taillight.
Any less than that and you'll only have either brake or presence light!

If there are three wires you need to check that positive third cable as it is either broken somewhere before the tailight OR actually Inside the taillight!

METHOD: change the wires to check if it's the taillight!

You got two options!

Option #1: Plug the wiring loom presence light POS onto the taillight brake light POS.
Does it light up?

Option #2: Plug the wiring loom brake light POS on to the taillight presence light POS.
Does it light up?

#1 - I think your problem here is a faulty neutral switch!

There should be a small cable which is routed very close to the countershaft sprocket that connects to the neutral switch.

The top of the neutral switch resembles to a sparkplug...

I had something like this on my XT...that small cable was heavily corroded and a cleanup with some sand paper worked!

check yours!

I changed my neutral switch, cause it was gone bad. didn't always work (rarely) when in neutral, and sometimes just went out.

The switch was "hanging" (ging very rough and tight) just replaced it with a new from kedo :)

As for you're rearbulb/light problem, check wint a regular bulb from a mate, og buy ne cheap at the gasstation. If it doesn't work, check you're wires. Also, LED's often only work one way, meaning that you need to hook it up sp + from battery is to + on the led....regular bulbs can be take the juice going either way. So check that the led is hooked up correctly.

Thanks for the replies fellas, we have been having lots of rain here, so no time to check out any of your guy's solutions, but will definately check them out.

For my tail light though, its actually the stock tail light, with one of those LED bulbs in there. My bad as I should have explained that a little better.

No rain here for 2 weeks now it's hot as hell outside!

anyway, leds or no leds that's the way to check the cables from and to the taillight! ;)
