E85 Ethanol

I Need A Little Help. I Have An 1988 Fzr1000 Yamaha And Would Like To Know If It Will Run On E85 Ethanol And If So What, If Any, Are The Draw Backs?

Yes but you probably wont want to.
An engine with carbs can be jetted for alcohol, ie you need a complete rejet (I think the jet sizes are +/- twice the size of petrol jets - cant buy, will have to drill). But then you won't be able to run normal petrol... Also there is the possibility that you will need to change the ignition curve and excessive heat may be a problem too.

And then what do you have? Alot of money and time spent getting it working right, a decrease in value and then only being able to travel in areas with E85 freely avaliable.

IMHO E85 is only an option for 'flexifuel' vehicles, saving money on fuel for me requires a more economical bike!

Would have been fine with fuel injection , the right heat spark plugs and an O2 sensor, it would have worked it out for you!

Babybadger... O2 sensor... please explain :confused1: what is it and what does it do?

O2 sensor = Lambda sensor - used to indicte the amount of fuel left in the exhaust gas. Or something like that ... the EFI uses it to adjust the amount of fuel going into the motor - thus getting the best air/fuel ratio all the time .. at at least some of the time.

Ethonol has less energy than petrol .. so you will have to burn more of it to get the same performance. On my DR650 it says up to 10% ethonol is ok .. Possible draw backs (other than economy/performance) are the possiblity of it effecting rubber fuel line components, the float bowel .. I'd steer clear of it .. unless you are really forced to have it and then I'd try to get rid of it as quickly as possible.

Some comments from people in Brazil indicate that Yamahas are particulary sensitive to it .. not certian I belive it .. but that particular post ended up withthe bike having an unrelated problem .. think it run ok on the fule after the cause problem was fixed...

If you want to try it .. have the tank almost empty .. put a little in and test .. if it does not work fill tank with normal fuel and use that fuel up fairly quickly .. don't let it sit in the garage ...

That seems interesting.. I was just looking for info :) on my island there isn't that type of fuel at least for a few years...

Thanks.
