Standard XT600 vs. Tenere

I am looking at buying a pre '89 XT600 for an overland trip through Africa. What is the difference between a standard XT600 and a Tenere

tenere has larger tank (83-85: 28 l, 86-90: 24 l).
even bigger tanks (up to 40 l) are available.
seat is more comfortable for long distance travel.
out of this only minor differences.

Can you tell me if an old model tank of a xt600Z 83-85 fits the 86-90 model xt600Z?

And where can I find a lager tank for the xt600z 89 model?

Would be very handy to know what the aprox price is aswell

no, it doesn't fit. mainly because in tenere 86-90 the airbox is located under the tank / above frame tube.
larger tank (38 l kevlar) is available at goetz in germany (www.goetz-motorsport.de, search for xt 600 tank).
i think they work together with m&p.
price is 699 euro plus shipping.
this tank is for 1VJ, it doesn't fit for 3AJ without modifiying the whole front.

Can you tell me what I need to remodel on a 3AJ to fit the 38 ltr tank as I whish to have some more capacity that way.

Is it only the replacement of the oil cooler?

no, you have to change the whole front / cockpit.

i think the problem with the teneres is that they are all very old now and to find one with low mileage which hasnt had a rough life is near on impossible...

By no means am i saying avoid them, but you need to be certain of its mechanical condition and upkeep.

i think if your gonna do a ride to africa and your buying a second hand bike then you need to take the engine apart and have a look in side just to make sure. if you do find any problems, its cheap enough to buy new bits, i replaced my gears, gear drum, oil pump, had the bore honned, new piston rings, bigger piston and all that cost £400, cheap as you like. and if you are stripping her down and you have a 3aj then it might be a good idea to fit a kick start, it's easy to do and the engine casing already has the setup for it, you just need to buy the parts,
