Cracking Frame type oil tank

Help!

I’m in Kenya at the moment and I’m trying to get my frame type oil tank welded as it’s cracking up on most of the welds. Has anyone ever had this problem before or have I a dud frame. The welder over here has asked me to find out what the frame is made of so he knows what welding wire to use. If any of you XT experts knows this please let me know ASAP.

Thanks

Haven't the slightest idea what the frame is made of. Should be some kind of carbon steel. But, since apparently nobody knows, I would suggest that your welder just experiments a bit on a piece of the frame where it does not matter.

Sorru cannot help you more ..

I assume that it will be Mig welded? I'm not sure that you have a great choice of welding wire for Mig's.

I'd be concerned about any leaking oil catching fire. I say this as someone who's welded used fuel tanks in the past......

Good luck

Steve

Hey thanks anyway guys.

This has been a hard one to try and sort out, even many attempts to e-mail various Yamaha agents and even Yamaha Japan; I have had no reply to! So in the end we welded it with normal carbon wire, so hope it all holds together.

Thanks again
Daryl

You can tell what kind of metal it is by how it reacts to being ground. The colour and the way the sparks scatter are different between metals. I supposed you could compare to a known metal. That's all I know...this was discussed on www.thegsresources.com You'll have to do a search to get further detail.

Have fun, Steve
