Confused by Chris Scott

I am planning an overland trip from London to Cape Town and, same as Ewan McGregor, the first thing I did was to buy the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook.

I am currently weighing up the options for a suitable bike and saw on page 40 of the latest edition of the AMH that the XT600E has a range of 530km/355mls at 19kpl/45mpUSg. Now, with a 15l tank, the sums clearly doesn't add up, unless my maths are failing me horribly!

Can somebody please tell me what the apporoximate range for a standard XT600 is?

well, you've got the data: 19kpl and 15 litres is 285km. Chris was presumably referring to the older model with a bigger tank

As Rich said, probably referring to the Tenere model (28 litre tank). Getting quite old now?

A newer XT/TT or XR/XL with a large aftermarket tank may be a better bet.

I believe Rich Lees has such a bike for sale, already equipped?

Hi

I get at leasts 200 miles out of my 23 ltr Tenere. I would recommend is buying a tenere go for the AJ3 model and fit a kick starter.

Thanx Rich, but for the moment it is a bit rich for my budget! (pardon the pun!)

One day though...!

An XT600E should give you at least 23 kms. per litre. Especially when travelling.

Hi - I have a 3AJ for sale in the UK. Just posted on the 'bikes for sale' page.

My middle name is 'inexpensive' (just don't call me cheap).

In case it isn't obvious yet, NAMSA spotted the first recorded typo in AMH5. No doubt many more will crop up.
I was referring to the 15L XT-E which should return 285km/190 miles at a typical 19kpl. The other Top Ten mpgs look about right.
