CDI for XT , not for XTE?

Hi,
I'm looking for a spare CDI for my trip, as I heard that it often dies along the way, and that it's big trouble.
I first try to find a XT CDI, but it seems that it is different for XTE.
As I was looking for one, a man told me that the CDI use to die only on XT, and not on XTE.
The piece is very expensive (150EUR for an old one) so I wonder if I really need one.

The man told me also that on XTE the regulator would be weak.
Any info about this?

Thank you
Philippe

If you cant afford to buy a CDI unit and regulator you could rent one from David Lambeth. He keeps non oem stuff in stock as well as second hand units. He is quite happy to sell units to you and then buy them back at the end of the trip assuming you havnt used them. I know this doesnt help initial outlay much, but at least you'll have some cash for when you get back!!

You can probably get his contact details off this site, or drop me a mail and I'll dig it out.

your information is correct.
in 1990, yamaha changed the ignition system from cdi (capacitive discharge ignition) to the more advandced battery ignition. only the tenere 3AJ and the kick-start version of the 3tb model where still equipped with the old ignition system at that time.
the cdi untis are assembled from 'old-fashioned' electronic stuff, lots of resistors, capacitors etc. while in the battery ignition also pics are used.
it seems that the latter one are more reliable than the old cdi units (although even here ignition is not a common trouble-maker i would say from my experience).
the big advantage of the cdi units is that ignition works independent from battery, so even with broken battery you are able to ride.
and in case the cdi doesn't work it is relatively simple to substitute it. there is a french guy who has developed a basic cdi which you can build yourself and which will enable you to reach the next town, at least.
if i were to ride around the world with xte, i wouldn't take a spare ignition box with me. it's very unlikely to get trouble from this. and even if so you will find an internet-cafe somewhere out in the desert and than we will see what we can do.

best regards
klaus

Correct Klaus, but Philippe I would definitely change the 47AX voltage regulator for a new model with cooling fins.

Thank you
I precise my XTE is a 3TB model from 1996.

I have a regulator 3TJ01 / SH629A-12 whith cooling fins.

So you think I wouldn't have any kind of problem from these electronical parts. Nice to hear that!

Any other opinions?
