Case-Saver Query
Any of you XT6 Guru's know if anyone makes these for the 600?.....:confused1:


I'm thinking that a Case-Saver like this....along with a new chain roller would prolong chain life noticably....
Any1 have any experience with these or know where to get one?.....

I havent sen those before. Clever. What are they made from? Dothey go all the way round the front of the sprocket?

I believe they're made from the same type of nylon material that they used on the XT500/550's chain tensioners.....:confused1:
& Yes, they do surround most of the front sprocket.

Might just have to buy the material & make 1 myself.

Interesting. What model is the bike in the photo, and is the case saver stock, or aftermarket? If aftermarket, do you know who makes them?

The bike is very obviously a Yamaha TT/XT500 (with mods).

These case-savers were made and marketed by Pro-Tec (USA) during the 80's. They are made of about 3mm Aluminium Alloy and shaped with the intention of safely guiding a broken chain through the countershaft area without bunching up. Their internal radius runs fairly close to the outer diameter of the chain's rollers - so ideally they should be sized to suit the sprocket you are running.

For anyone that has thrown a chain on the Yam 500 motor, these things will save you having to repair the oil return pipe after the chain gives it a good whipping!

Pro-Tec also made guards/guides that were like steel strip material wrapped around the outside of the chain. Pro-Tec also made lots of stuff for the 500 single - where are they now?

Pro-tec thumper parts?
My father was the original owner of pro-tec all through the 80,s and into the 90,s. There is not much to speak of when it comes to old pro-tec parts. My father made the case saver and many other parts for the yamahas but now at pro-tec they only have stuff for new bikes and watercraft. I will look in my dads barn for a case saver if you really want one . If you want to see a really trick tt600 here is a pic of the bike my father built for rick johnson all hand built almost no oem parts.It is the last pro-tec bike my dad made and the only one we have...........................................Ken ny Clark[IMG][/IMG]

Hi, back again.

Thanks Kenny for that detail on Pro-Tec. Sounds like the 90's were a watershed for many of the "old" truly enthusiast-style accessory / modding companies in the US. So many of them went down or were bought out by entrepreneurs. FOX, FMF, DG, Redline - so many. The bike looks beautiful (please, more detailed pics if you can)!

Anyway, back to the case-saver! KEDO make a beautiful version in Aluminium for the XT / SR 500. See their latest 'katalog' in the 'drive' section (KEDO - Performance Products). It can be used with sprockets up to 16 teeth. See pic.

The 500 cases had the machined face positioned perfectly for this style of case-saver. For other models, Pro-tec used a custom bent flat strip to 'line' the curved flange or web around the chain path. It spread the load of chain impact to avoid case damage, rather than preventing the chain bunching up like the pictured one. This style will be necessary for the 600s. I'm still trying to find a photo.

A good case-saver is essential on the 500 cases as a derailed chain will wipe out the oil feed tube or, at best, hole it. I've repaired too many of these over the years.

In the absence of any after market mods due to the age of the bike I would be inclined to have a go at making one myself. To make one out of a block of white teflon (PTFE) using a scroll saw and router cant be too complicated. Make a template out of blue foam, for the radii and instead of using the existing plastic sprocket cover, machine one out of aluminium and mount the teflon to this.
