Bike decision

Hello Everybody, Hello Yamaha Experts,

I have a BMW GS (R80) which is 1000 cc. I ride it to work-home and urban also. I find it kind of big for daily and urban riding. Planning to buy a second bike for daily use and also may be a bit off roading. So we can say I will use it % 80 on (and urban) and % 20 off road.
I don't want it to be big and heavy.

My short list narrowed to:
* Yamaha WR450F
* XT 600
* Suzuki DRZ400


What I look is also: easy to find parts, easy to maintain.

What would you say for my choice? What would be better? Could you please share your experiences.

You know you want a Yamaha XT6...

No contest - Go for the venerable YAMAHA XT600E. You know it makes sense...

I may be a little biased but I can confirm to you just how damn good this beast of a bike is. It does almost everything well. You can source a good bike for less than £1,500 ($3,000). You won't find a better "bang for bucks" bike anywhere.

Be aware that great bike that the XT is, you're talking a BIG downgrade on your daily ride/commute. Power, handling and comfort will be reduced.

I'd keep the GS on road tyres for the commute, and have a DRZ with knobblies for weekend fun!

If you can only have one bike, the XT is the best on your list, for what you want. If budget allows, the new F650 would be favourite, given the high proportion of road use you plan.

I disagree, I have a 2001 Buell X1 Lightning and have just bought a 3AJ, after having a dominator and then a transalp, and my friends said it would be going backwards, not so, I cant keep off the XT and it is potentially saving my licence.....

I can see the Buell going before the 3AJ, the XT is just so much fun , wet or dry , commute or offroad.....and on London roads the suspension is just right.

You have lots of options I have just sold my BMW RT and got back on my TTR 250 and its a laugh a minute I commute on the motorway for 10 miles and its fine. An XT would make a great all round bike if you are going for just 1 bike. The suzuki is also a good option probably the middle man inbetween something like my TTR and the XT. Have a look at Tims new bmw 650 gs (800) that looks like it could lend its hand to some good off roading.

If you are straying far afield the Yamahas are simple to fix and find parts for.

Very confused...

I have doubts about DRZ.

Wishing something I can handle with fuel economy. A light bike which will go anywhere anytime. Simple too. With less vibration.

drz, xt, wr? Ahh, have time to think about...

It seems I have to change seat and tank with all...

No pitty, F series is out of my wish list... No matter 650 or 800 cc.

Will give a try to Jap girl this time

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
