It looks like a 3aj from the tenere 1988 -1989. But as Henry says, what are the first 3 letters on the engine serial number

I imagine the wiring loom and TCI mapping etc would be different on a quad. But otherwise no. The 98 -99 3AJ was the last of that particular series even though the engine became widely used in quads, the TT600 etc following the end of the tenere series, there were still some fundemental differences. Someone with more experience with these later incarnations may be able to shed more light on the issue, but I'd suspect that you may not be able to directly swap ignition electronics between the two.

not a 3Aj
Definitely, as the cover on the gears for the starter has the recess for the clutch cable as per later / middle XT600 engines. Also does not have the tacho connection, so my guess is it is an XT600, but not the newest since Jens told me that do have tachos.
It is originally defintely NOT CDI, but TCI ignition. So you'll need a suitable loom and TCI box for that, as well as battery and regulator / rectifier. To confirm, easy enough to see the number and color of wires coming from the stator, if there are only two pickup wires it is TCI. Maybe somebody knows whether TCI boxes are interchangeable for XT6's? A |

I think it's a 3TB (1991 - 1995). It has no tacho, clutch cable on the left with the groove in the starter gear cover as pointed out above and it also looks to be more grey in colour than silver (4PT is definitely silver).
TCI is interchangeable between 3TB and 4PT. Regards - Alastair. |

I believe that's the Grizzly 600 engine! it does look like a quad frame but the grizzly 600 has a single carb with a special Y-shape manifold and on the picture that's a two part carb...
same as 1990-1996(correct me the change year) XT600E's Vando
