can anyone show me the baffle of a stock XT600 muffler?

I'm trying to either locate a replacement, or more likely, produce my own baffle as mine is long since lost and I'm looking to quiet it down for the sake of keeping the neighbors as friends.

can anyone show me what the baffle insert for these mufflers looks like? the parts diagrams only show so much, the more detail I have, the better I can reproduce one.

I would take mine out but it's sooo rusted I doubt I could make it fit back in =\

Someone out there probably has one!

trust me, if you remove it, you wont like it. mine sounds like crap right now. its beefy, but very annoying at speed.

Its basicly just the tip of the "plug" on the exhaust, you can do the same with the stock one, just saw of the pipe to make it breathe better.

thats EXACTLY what I was looking for. thanks! I have to figure out how to make a piece of circular sheet metal now for this application.

its easy enough to actually build, just a matter of making it.

angle grinder, file, slice piece of exhaust downpipe - quick weld- BBQ high heat black paint- job done

Opportunity for tuning

If you make this and leave the tailpipe long both in and out of the silencer you can shorten it a little at a time and see what difference it makes to the sound/power, if any. Just a thought. You could use a jigsaw to cut the blank and a hole saw to make the hole for the pipe?

well, my friend is buying a plasma cutter soon, I was planning on simply buying a little sheetmetal at our steel place, and using the plasma cutter, then from there, simply weld it in at his place. no biggie.

oothef 9 Sep 2010 00:19

Plasma cutter! I've heard they're v. good but after my time......... Oxy/acetylene were good enough in my day....and filing, lots of filing, the whole world files with you. I remember when it were all fields round here..... gibber gibber hey

bobthebiker 9 Sep 2010 02:51

I've used metal files. you have fun with them things, I'm gonna fire up the bench grinder.

I find removing the stock baffle on my XT does mess up the fuelling a bit, flat spots and backfires. The carbs and timing do seem to be set up for that amount of back pressure.

Mine didnt' I got a little more umpf of torque in the very low revs, bud taht was with the lid of the airbox remomved, and with a pipercross (piperx) airfilter
