Cam Chain worn - Time to replace?

Hey all,
I have an 84 XT600 and the cam chain tensioner is extended all the way out when installed...It is time for a new cam chain? The bike has 14,xxx and it is otherwise VERY clean. Any suggestions ae greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Drew

Hey there, mine is a 1990 XT600E and cam chain broke with 30'000 KM (yes, I know....)

I would change it, although it ain't got that much mileage it is an older chain.. and it ain't that expensive to get a new one..

Have fun and Happy New Year!

Thanks Bacardi! You're probably right. With that much slack, it's better to be safe than sorry...

Hej,

as the milage is way to low for a worn out timing chain, I would recommend to check the function of the tensioner and also the chain guides.

Just my two cents

The head is currently off the motor so I can see the chain guides...they look fine...not too much wear. The tensioner extends all the way out once I install it against the chain. Once in place, the chain is nice and tight, but my concern is that the tensioner is extended ALL the way out. Any other ideas? BTW, I'm in the US and the 14,xxx was miles, not Kilometers.

mine had about 30000 km or something like 19000 miles when the chain broke...so yeah, do change it!

when my chain broke, I had to change both intake valves and yeah, valves plus labour hours plus gaskets and stuff.....

get the new cam chain! I would if I'd known before it happened :\

Yamaha of Troy or www.powerpartsplus or Outboard Boats, Outboard Motors, Outboard Parts. Yamaha, Honda, Mercury Marine, Evinrude and Johnson boat parts. Lowest price OEM Yamaha Outboards. ( i bought it from boats.net)
