Caburator/engine attachment.

I recently bought a 2KF that I am rebuilding for long distance travelling. I noticed that the rubber parts of the carburator to engine attachment pieces had loosened from the alumium parts. Some yellow powder came out between the two.
The bike is 13 years old an has done 14000Km. Does this defect occur frequently at this age and mileage or is indication of an other poblem like overheating for instance. The bike seems to run smoothly.
I found I fast type of glue that should withstand petrol and 200 °C and glued the pieces back together. Until now (after only 500 km) the joint seems to hold.
Can I thrust this repair? Does anyone have any repair experience on this?

Hi

I had the same problem with de carburator rubber on my '88 3AJ. Those things are quite expensive but I renewed them. Dont think it it wise to try to repair them as only a small airleak will seriously influence how you engine runs. A bigger leak could even damage the engine as it can cause overheating.
Repair it with glue is probably not a very safe and reliable sollution, especially not it you intend to do long distance travel with it.

Me too!
Common problem, I think - mine's 12 years old 48k km.
For long distance use, I wouldn't risk simply glue - I consulted with people at work who work with elastomer bonding.
New parts are not too expensive.

Never repair XT inlet rubbers with glue.
The repair just wont last. Aluminium oxidises almost immediatly in air so no matter how clean you get the flange you are bonding onto an oxidised layer.
If you are desperate you could use some kind of etch primer maybe??
New parts are the answer really.
