XT600Z (3DS) Oil cooler / luggage rack

Hi All,

Just wondering... I've heard that the oil cooler on the 3DS (3AJ) isn't up to the job in very hot conditions, is there a simple way to improve this? A guy I’ve spoken to here in DK said that an oil cooler from a 2CV can be fitted but that it might have the opposite effect and cool too much… any ideas?

Another problem I’m having is trying to find a luggage rack, I can’t seem to find anywhere on the net that still makes them for Tenere’s. I’d like to find one that is strong enough to take a jerry can and panniers, could someone please point me in the right direction?

Hi.
The MK2 version of the 3AJ has a longer oil cooler (about 30 cm)
Do you have this one?
We make luggage racks for 3AJs all the time, off the shelf Hepco&Becker of fully custom built racks to your requirements.

Thanks for the reply, the oil cooler on my 3DS has 3 blades and is *about* 15cm long (can't see it right now).

David, could you please send some photos of the rack (+ price). Also, in an earlier post you wrote that you had a solution for the 5th gear problem, as I intend to rebuild the engine over winter I'd like to hear more about the parts you mentioned (and price).

Have you tried Touratech?
They make racks for XT600's.
Bracken (who are their distributors in the UK)quoted me £150.

I might be wrong but I think Touratech only make a rack for the 95 onwards 4PT model.

This is my plan for the racks on my 3AJ (and I believe it is a common solution):

I'm going to but the hoops from Touratech, since they're the hardest bits to make (and the Tour. ones are exremely strong and regularly shaped. I think they may even be double walled.

Next, I will get the rest of the rack syste, welded up (I have someone in mind), to fit with the off the peg hoops.

And then all I have to do is decide which boxes to use. Obviously Tour. are an option, but I have also heard good things (from Karim) about the xXx boxes he used. And then there are Swiss Boxes and those nice Tesch ones. Dunno yet.

But buying the hoops eases the trickiest part of the rack build. HTH, let me know what you decide...

Like POB/London, I've decided to go with the touratech hoops and DIY the rest. At the moment it looks like I'll also go for the touratech alu boxes.

POB/London, what other changes/fixes have you made?

I am doing the same as yourselves, using the touratech hoops.
My girlfriends father is apparently a wizz with a welding machine and has kindly offered to help me. I will be looking at making an engine gaurd/jerry carrier as well.

Barging in a bit late in the discussion:

1. Oil cooler 3DS: I just drove to Cape Town with one. No problems, so why bother changing it. I used 20W50 engine oil.

2. I used Hepco & Becker luggage rack with Daerr boxes and brackets. The rack and the boxes are indestructable. The brackets for fixing the boxes to the rack should be strengthened on the inside with a steel strip (where the hook goes in the rack). I figured for that price could not do it myself. Check website www.daerr.de or something. The only disadvantage is that the whole system builds rather wide. Big advantage is that the boxes can be removed easily from the bike!

Thanks for the tip Auke, the alu-boxes are certainly cheaper than Touratech’s !! Could you send a couple photos of them to my e-mail? Their site doesn't have any decent pictures...

BTW I've decided to stick with the standard oil cooler as others have also said they've not had problems with it.

Hello again - sorry for the delay, I was in the Aosta valley, Italy for a while (no internet).

I am undecided, whether to use the Touratech boxes or the xXx ones. Does anyone have any experience of xXx? I can get a pair (with no fitting kit) here in the uk for 150GBP.

I already know that Ernie the Rack at Overland Solutions will do my luggage carriers for me. He has strengthened my side stand and put a fott on it, and he has also fitted auxiliary headlights to an Aprilia Pegaso I once had. He is very good.

Still watching this discussion though...

In terms of other things, I have got to:

*upgrade the shock on my bike with a heavier spring
*get an engine rebuild (possibly DL?)
*Finally get my spare pair of wheels rebuilt using Talon / Excel rims and h-d spokes
*make / buy engine bars, and attach PLASTIC jerry cans to them somehow (red for fuel, blue for water?.
*make a tool case to fit onto the front of my bashplate
*fit a temp guage
