Well have the cecond hand clutch now and am waiting on my new parts arriving,the new cam chain and both 5th gears and two oil seals and just bought a small compressor and tool kit including a rattle gun which I can put it all back together with.Just need to borrow my mates torque wrench and I can reassemble the engine.
Had the head overhauled by a company called HPE engineering and they did an absolutely top job of cleaning inspecting and rebuiding the head including re seating the valves which were not seating properly in the first place and skimming the head as it was warped and checking the wear in my piston and head and re honing the bore.Looked brand new when they had finished it and all at a good price.......if I ever need to do another engine they wil be the guys I use next time.:thumbup1:

i think one easy way to block the clutch shaft is to take off the left-side case (outer) cover and use the rotor tool, if you have one (i.e. the special wrench that you need to remove the rotor when you change the doohickey).

i'll try that tomorrow.... i need to remove my clutch basket to install a kick starter on my 1988 KLR 650, and i don't have the clutch basket tool.

after reading all the bad stories in this thread (and other threads on the same subject), i won't take a chance, and i'll just unscrew my left cover and lock the crankshaft with the rotor tool. it would seem to be a risk-free way?

i don't want to risk damaging the transmission by putting the bike in gear (i heard that it's possible to break the gears).

Should work - but I now use the method suggested by someone above - a compressed air impact driver. This tool has turned out to be my best investment in years (yea I know if you don't have a compressor this doesn't help much).

Good luck with installing the kick start. I did it a year or two ago on mine; its a pain to use but it has got me out of real trouble once.

By the way if anyone is interested, the bodgy repair to a broken clutch basket leg using a bolt I described back on page 1 is still going strong after nearly 80,000km and lots of abuse. When I checked it about 3 months ago (when I was doing something else) was showing no signs of problems.
