Brake upgrade for early XT's???

Is it posible to make these bikes stop a bit better?

I have an '84 XT and the front brake is a weedy single pot effort. Is it possible to put the later 2 pot caliper on?

Or are there any other calipers from other bikes that may fit???

yes, easiest way replacing with a 90-> front fork (both legs) and wheel spindle. (and brake unit naturally).Wheel is the same.

Some ppl successfully replaced only lower part of the fork between 88 and 90 models, but i'm not sure if it's possible to do btween 84 and 90...

Just to confirm -

Can you keep the same yokes - i.e. are the fork tube diameters the same?

Does this apply for all post 1990 XT-600s?

1988-89 and 1990-> are the same yoke, note that after 1995 there was another change and also disk size was increased (from 267 to 282 if I remember right)

Exclamation Braided hose also an idea!!

I replaced the front hose with a braided one - made to my spec at local hydraulic shop. Works like a dream and better stopping power!

Thanks for the info cyberzar

As for braided hoses, I did that, but the brake is still crap: I lost *all* braking power last week, coming down a beautiful wriggly pass here in the the Alpes Maritimes: it was quite extraordinary - with the front brake applied to the max, I could push the bike around like there was nothing at all. Thank goodness for engine braking ...

I'm just loking to upgrade just the caliper not the whole front end. Goodridge hose is already fitted.
There must be a compatable caliper that will fit:confused1:

There is another way without change fork.
Bigger disk, and a caliper adapter.

I wanted to explain yesterday, but today I found a post (in german but with pictures) that is fully explaining...

That's more like it - I don't know much German but I got the general idea.

I just need to find a machine shop to do the bracket.
