Wink blown head gasket??

hey i just bought an xt600 and every time i start it ,smoke comes out of the exhaust like crazy. my friend says it might be the head gasket. i wanna know wat you guys think. also when taking off the head and stuff to replace the gasket, do i need to redo the timing or something when putting it back on..?

Blue smoke or white smoke ?

Blue tinted smoke is usually oil , white is usually just condesation.

If it is oil then it can be the head gasket, valve stem seals of worn piston rings.

Removing the head will require you to retime the engine but its quite simpe to do.

Sounds like your burning a bit of oil yer. Its not necessarily the head gasket though. Valve stem seals are much more likely.

head gaskets smoke all the time, not just on start up.

head gaskets are silly money for what they are but what you gonna do ?????

Thanks,

I'm a bit surprised that you have bought the gasket already if you are not sure what is causing the problem:

For a blow by blow account of gasket issues, but on a different bike\similar engine try:-

Happy reading!

thanks,
If you've never touched an engine before then I strongly suggest you take it to a shop or get someone who has to help you out.

If the bike is new to you I would make sure the oil level is correct my xt will smoke on start up if it is over filled with oil.

My TTR smokes like crazy on start-up, started about 3 months ago, it stops smoking after about 30-45 seconds, on occasions it doesn't smoke at all tho, very confusing.. Smelly white smoke, not sure about blue, but sure does smell like oil burning tho...

Read some place it may be valves leaking oil when the bike sits overnight...

Have you sorted yours?

J
