Bike fell over

I was changing the front sprocket and fitting a silencer and had the bike on a bike stand and it fell over, scraping the mirrors and handguards, chipped a few layers of paint off my tank (not back to bare metal thankfully) but worst of all when I went out to the garage later I saw I had an oil leak on the left side of the engine.

It seems to be coming from the big screw or plug as they call it in the workshop manual. I think it is used for adjusting the valve clearances.

I just looked on cmsnl and the screw is £7 and the oring is £7.50, the parts are usually a bit cheaper from a place near me. I never used cms but it's a good place to get an idea of price.

So hopefully if I replace the screw and oring I will stop the leak.

What is the best thing to do on the chipped petrol tank?

Seems you might have had the leak before it fell over or have you done some other damage to cause it to leak?....I would get some touch up paint for the chips and a fine artist brush.....

There were definitley no leaks prior to it falling over today.
I know because I keep it garaged and have a large sheet of cardboard underneath the bike.

The previous owner apparently had tried to polish that area of the engine cover, I guess he did not realisre it is plastic.

I did manage to do the big screw up a tiny bit just now but there is still a small bit of oil seeping.

Take the cap off and check the threads. Maybe the cap has split, being plastic.

Also check the ring incase it has split, although they usually still seal even when broken.

You can take the cap off without oil gushing out as long as the engine isnt running.

I take it you have a Motech centre stand ?? They aren't very stable are they !!

I used to put a ratchet strap or piece of rope around the strap and then around crash plate or top tube to stop the stand dropping back on itself ! It REALLY REALLY helps.

Thanks Ted, I did wonder if oil would come gushing out or not.

This may seem like a silly question but is there a special tool for undoing the plug? I nipped it up with a screwdriver but a tiny piece of plastic chipped off too. It need a long flat edged tool rather than a screwdriver.

I don't have a centre stand, I bought a hydraulic lift stand, have used it many times before.
It never felt that great but I was kneeling and had my head down sliding the rear wheel axle back in when it fell over.

You're best off with a large coin or the end of a tyre lever etc

A screw driver will chip it as you have found !

You only need to do it up hand tight. It's not a pressure seal. They are a bugger to remove if you over tighten it or wreck the slot.

Forget the prices over CMSNL or whatever they're called!
The prices DO NOT include VAT and the shipping charges are too high!

Also, they even bill you on VAT over the shipping charges!

Trust me!
Once I went to order the fairings for my XT and they were billing me almost 200euros just for shipping!

Also, It takes them forever to have your order shipped...
If you're in a hurry, get the parts locally!

Like I said I have never used cms but I can get a rough idea of cost there.
I asked a whole back for a/the price list of XT600E parts but nothing came back.

I ordered from a place that delivers next day and they have about 90% of the stuff I have ordered in the past in stock but this part they have to order in which takes 7-10 days.
£8.71 of which £2.99 is delivery costs. Paying for next day delivery seems daft if they don't have it in stock, needs must.

I am just pleased I did not do any more damage, when I first saw the oil on the floor I feared the worst.

The part arrived yesterday morning so even when it was out of stock it only took 4 days from ordering to arrive.
All is back to normal again now.
Took it for a lovely ride today, the weather was perfect and I am pleased with the way it is running.
