Avon Distanzia

Has anyone had any experience with Avon Distanzia's on a XT600E?
What's the verdict on road bias tyres for this bike?
I'm currently on Dunlop Trailmax which are o.k dry but due to the narrow profile are not great in wet which I guess is much the same for all comparable tyres.
What do you think?
Cheers.

I opted for Michelin SIRAC's here - http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...michelin-35474

Tenere Tom 2 Oct 2008 20:36

I too opted for Avons but went for the 100% road option - The Avon Road Rider.

Avon Tyres Ltd - tyres .

As I'm not going to be riding on anything but tarmac for the rest of the year I thought I'd give 'em a go.

They are much more stable and responsive than any semi on/off tyre I've used.

Having just used a Distanzia for over a year's worth of commuting, I can recommend them. No worries at all. Last ages, well, over 7k miles anyway. Just put a 2nd hand Sirac on purely because rear tyre caught a fence staple on way home the other friday:(. Managed to ride the last 15miles (slowly) with a complete flat because the Distanzia stayed seated on the rim :thumbup1:

Thanks for the input guy's, I picked up a second hand rear wheel back in the 'summer' with an immaculate Distanzia on it and was wondering whether to use it, my existing fronts getting a bit crazed alongside the knobbly bits so could replace it with a matching Avon.
Lifes a bitch sometimes XTorange but that's quite an impressive recomendation for Avon, incidently what pressures do you use, have you ever thought of trying Ultra Seal in the tubes?
Cheers.

on ,em now!

hey,
I,k in Korocco and on the distanzias now, pretty good tyres, after a couple of thou on em there,s hardly no wear, and they come with the bike and had a few thou put through them!! shame as im gonna dump em in casablanca for knobbies!!

have fun

Hi,
pressure in rear was about 18psi and front (still on bike) about 21psi. Didn't have any 'gloop' in at the time. I do have sealer in the rear now though!
I shall be fitting an 18" Distanzia whenever i get round to fitting my alloy rim.

My little Ténéré is in the workshop right now to change her worn Michelin T63 for the Avon Distanzia. I'm planning a trip to Switzerland this summer so I won't need the knobbies, as I get a good deal for these tyres I decided to give a try.

I'll let you know my impressions after some km.

In my experience the Avon Distanzia are GREAT tires ... and especially good in rain, very secure, good grip everywhere, long lasting, stable. Probably an 80/20 tire = Road 80% Off road = 20%

I've used Distanzia's on several bikes going back over 10 years, mixing and matching with many other tires.
KLR650, Tri Tiger, V-strom and my current Suzuki DR650 ... which is about the same weight as your XT600.

On a 600 size machine, the Distanzia wear well. They are head and shoulders above Avon's road rider tire, which is a "budget" tire. Distanzia is TOP OF THE LINE. Fantastic wet road grip. Deep, wide "sipes" push out a lot of water, much more than average road tire.

Great on paved roads wet or dry, OK on packed dirt roads, extremely TOUGH side wall, I rode one flat for 50 miles at
50 mph. No problem. (DR650)

Tire Pressures on your XT should be "around" 22 to 25 PSI Front, 25 to 29 PSI rear, depending on load and conditions.

I've run nearly ALL the competing tires in the class over the years, about 200K miles. Tourance, Distanzia, Anakee, MT90 Scorpion, Shinko E704.

All are very good, the Shinko the least expensive, the Metzeler Tourance the most expensive ... and longest lasting. The Distanzia lasts about the same as all the others listed ... the Tourance is out front on longevity.

All provide great side grip, great wet weather performance, stable under hard braking and ... quite long lasting. bier

Interesting - how many miles did you get roughly Mollydog?

My rear Distanzia would last about 5500 to 6500 miles on my DR650, a bit less on Vstrom and Tiger. But going off road and spinning it up a lot on rocks would lower those numbers some, as would high speed cruising on the road (over 80 mph)

If one was careful on a 650 class bike I'd say a rear Distanzia may go over 7000 miles. The fronts last much longer ... 8K to 10K miles. My front always have enough tread depth but begin to "cup", so care must be taken pushing hard in rain.

The rears would begin flatten out and get THIN. This one below is wearing pretty well.

Probably about 5000 miles on this one .. maybe 1000 miles left?

This one about done! bier

I have Distanzias fitted to both my bikes, a Triumph Bonneville T100 and a Yamaha Super Tenere XT1200, as Mollydog says, they are a great tyre. I recently done a 4500 mile trip from the UK to Morocco, two up and fully loaded and the tyres worked great; excellent all weather road tyres and managed the off road sections with ease. There's still a good 2-3mm left in the centre of the tread but the tyre is beginning to square off though due to high speed Spanish motorway cruising.

The set I have on the Bonneville have about 6000 miles on them, 3.5 of which was a two up and loaded road trip to Bosnia and back and they hardly look worn at all.

I'd recommend them as a great 80/20, I don't see many people with them though for some reason.

Thanks - v helpful.

Had an unused set in my garage i took off an XR400, but looking for more mileage for my Africa trip next year so will go with K60s i think.

Only 150 Km so far, all of them on-road. I feel the handle improved in the turns but quite odd at very low speed, it feels like the bike falls easily. Too soon to have an opinion anyway.

On the down side, the bike looks less "aggressive" now. :P
