and then ...

hi all,
my starter clutch is after going and after 2 days searching here in Ecuador I cannot turn up the part. (89 tenere 3aj). I only have 5 weeks left but am told I will need to wait this time for the part. Its not looking good...

I have the rotor and starter clutch off and the clutch spins quite freely one direction and jams the other (as designed). When I assemble it and refit it though the starter motor just whirrs, sometimes it might turn over for a second before returning to this jamming and inevitable whirring.

When on the crankshaft the starter flywheel has alot of play present, you can shake it back and forth a sizeable amount. I have just noticed that the two bearings for this flywheel are very loose fitting.

Question = anybody know if these two bearings are locatable in a bearings shop or are they strictly yamaha ?

The teeth in the clutch are visibly flattened out = I am pulling them out one by one and reversing them at the moment as the profile on the other side is better. Some are a bitch to get out for some reason = anyone got any experience of pulling teeth?

As I write this it seems blindingly obvious that the bearings are probably my problem and thus preventing the flywheel from spinning straight and smooth and not jamming ... is this correct?

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated = just need this bike to start for another 5 weeks or so ... any short term fixes, ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated ... especially on the bearing front ...

thanks all

Bump Start?

maybe????

bearings should be available in any bearing stockist, a good parts guy (or a promise of a good drink!) usually gets there in the end.

bump

ok I am going to hit the streets for bearings

I once had to jump start an old banger from Prague to Dublin and found it quite tiring. This bike needs a tow to start, impossible otherwise.
Any other direction and I would just go but Im crossing into Colombia from here and think it might be handy to have a quick starter ...

thanks for getting back to me, appreciate it

Dont Forget To Take Old Bearings With Ya

im probably stating the obvious...........but.....it helps to take em along...lol

and Good luck!

Bump start in 3rd gear iff all else fails....with a push preferably! or a longish downhill run..... otherwise you will be..:cursing:

Bearing

I checked the parts catalogue, the partnumber is 93310-530R5. Not sure, maybe the part 530R5 is the standard designation for this bearing. Otherwise, check the bearings themselves: there should be numbers / letters on them.

Good luck

aaaarrghh

hey thanks guys - brought the bearings around to every bearing shop i cud find and bike stores - no joy ... got to try more on monday - this city sucks for parts

Am I right in presuming this is the cause of my floppy starter flywheel?
The crankshaft bearings were replaced 2000km ago and the crankshaft straightened - shud have changed them then alas ...

Oh also when putting on the rotor how tight do I have to get it? Do I put the nut on the crankshaft and use the hammer, tighten more, hammer again?

Finally ! anybody got a link/ideas to a post about taking those starter clutch teeth out and reversing them ? - I havent seperated the clutch from the rotor yet, the first 4 came out easy but now one or two are impossible to extract ...

as always thanks loads

oh yeah if anybody is flying to ecuador tomorrow? pm me ... haha

cheers

Try an engineering shop

those guys usually know where to get stuff or if not know of someone who knows of someone...... dont get downhearted.
As someone else posted on here somewhere, ( I think it was their signature actually) the wisdom of Yoda.... "there is No can't.... only Do, or Not Do."
