Aligning steering

Any tips on an easy way to align the front wheel up with my handlebars? I got an advisory on my last MOT which said my front wheel was slightly out of line with my bars. Can't say I can see it and don't notice when I ride so it must be pretty marginal. However, might as well get it sorted!

Bike is a 2003 XT 600E.

Cheers,

Matt :)

I've always used the Mk. 1 eyeball to do this. The human eye is pretty good at recognising whether something's square or not, and if you sit on the bike and get the bars straight, and then get off the bike (with glamorous assistant to hold it in place, of course) and sight from front to rear, any misalignment should be obvious. Alternatively, ride it slowly in a straight line and look at the bars - you will see immediately if they are out of line. If you find it's out of true, slacken off the fork bolts at the top and twist it straight. Don't forget to torque them up again afterwards. If it's straight as far as you can see, then choose another MoT centre next time. I think he's having you on. Any serious misalignment would make the bike very hard to steer.

Thanks for that, Richard, I'll give it a go.

I think hes talking poop..... Unless your forks, wheel, stem or bars are bent..

Your forks sticking out the same amount out of the clamps ??
