Air Filter Advice

Having recently bought my first bike (95 Xt600) I am slowly learning my way around the bike. I do not have a manual and would like some advice on the air filter. It appears as though the filter is comprised of a foam filter over a mesh box. My question is, is this foam meant to be oiled and how frequently. It appears as though the foam filter is made by Unifilter. What are your opinions on this brand of filter?

Unifilter is excellent - highly recommended.

Yes they are meant to be oiled. Wash in gas (petrol)and then in soap and water, dry thoroughly in the sun, then pour on some special oil (motor oil will do in a pinch) and work it throughout, then squeeze firmly to get rid of the excess.

Half a film can of oil for a smallish filter, full can for a big two-layer is about right. Filter will last for many years. My current one is 15 years old and still fine.

Uni says to soak the filter with oil, I did.
Later I thought that my transmission was leaking oil. I traced the oil back to the bottom of the tranny, then to the top of the tranny, then to the air box. Then I just wiped the air box out and that fixed the "oil leak"

much oil = less dirt in carb, but also less air-flow!
cleaning interval depends on air condition.
very dusty = every day
in town = every 6000 kms
there is special air filter oil available.
recomandable: k&n air filter, lasts forever, needs less maintenance.
