After market fuel tanks and cooling question...

Hi all,

Just a quick question to ask if anyone has experienced overheating issues after fitting an after-market tank to their XT600? I'm looking at replacing the basic tank on my 2000 XT600E with a 23ltr Acerbis jobbie, but the local bike shop I've been talking with has mentioned that their experience has been that doing so seems to create cooling problems.

Anyone got an opinion on that?

Cheers

Not a problem. I have used an Acerbis tank in the Sahara on my 2002 XTE and only problem with cooling even at 40 Degrees C was small amount of fuel vapour passing past fuel cap seal when fuel tank fully topped up and engine turned off. Whilst engine running or bike moving no Problem at all! only a bit of expansion. Engine was running on Fully Synthetic Silkolene and never used a drop of oil. Only overheating problem was me! Acerbis tank is a fit and forget item. Also good for when you fall off as they bounce well.

Acerbis 23Ltr Tank

Hi

As stated it's a fit and forget item - my 2002 XTE has sported one for nearly 4 years. Used off road most of the time including long distance trials, so has:

a) survived lots of crashes, including the famous slippery slate that covers a lot of Cornwall (not very forgiving)

b) not caused any overheating - the bike sits ticking over for long stretches in sections, not too sympathetic for an air cooled motor, and has always been fine.

The only gripe is the Acerbis fuel cap - you have to do it up mega tight or it leaks and the one way valve is crap - put another one way valve breather tube on as well... about £5 from any decent off-road shop.

Cheers Bish

Great, thanks for all the advice.

Next question, anyone know if an acerbis 23ltr tank from a 2002 XT will fit a 2000 XT? :smartass:

Big tank

I have a 23L Acirbis an my 98' XT600E and it a great tank. The motor does not show any sighn of overheating even on a 42 deg day. It bounce really well, it rocks:thumbup1:. Only problem is the cap doesn't lock and when the bike is upside down it leaks a lot.

Cheers Hanzie

I have the Acerbis too, never had any problem with overheating, i have a oil temperature gauge, and when going off road with very slow speeds, the oil goes up to 110ºC , that was the maximum tº on my XT, don't worry
