89' tenere vibrations

Hi all,

Just finished my 1000 km run-in after a top and bottom rebuild. The oil change was as I imagined it should be, a little darker and had some metal silt(?) in the oil filter.

A couple of problems have shown up though which I'd like to hear your opinions about.

1. There is quite a lot of soot coming out of the exhaust, I’ve cleaned the air filter and it's coated with a filter oil. The manifold rubber parts (between cylinder and carb.) have been changed. I haven’t tried the fuel/ air mix, could someone explain how to do this ? Any other ideas?

2. Vibration. During the rebuild I had the crankshaft rebuilt and changed the main bearings (Kedo changed the left side, the right side I bought and was a C3 bearing). I didn't change any other bearings. The vibrations are worst at low and high rpm(low more than high). Funny enough in 4th gear at 3500 rpm there is next to no vibrations. I changed the 5th gear during the rebuild. all the engine mount bolts are checked... Any ideas?

3. Clicking / ticking sound coming from instrument panel (inside speedometer or tachometer) the speedo needle "hops" at slow speeds. the cable is fine and has been oiled. Can the speedo be serviced(by myself) or is it sealed?

My last question is about security, This weekend some f**ker's tried to steal the bike *twice* by some stoke of luck both times they were disturbed. I used the handlebar lock (not hard to break) and a disc brake lock (which they took off with a hammer). I'd like to hear what people do to stop thieves. I little piece of mind would be nice whilst visiting friends / touring...

Hello Aubrey,

1) you can mess around with the idle mixture screw under the carb. Better is to go to a dyno test bench and have it properly tested.
2)possibly because you now have compression and before you didn't. What do you mean with low rpm? Some people complain about vibes below 2500 rpm, but they don't know that we're not supposed to run below 3500 !
3)could be where the cable sticks in the instrument. There's some kind of hub that need lubrification once in a while.
4) move to a safe place with a shed for the bike to sleep in. Don't ever wash it. Remove some non-vital parts. Put a warning sticker on it.

best security for any bike is to chain it to a lampost and put a crap cover over it, theory being if they cant see it.....
In truth though if someone wants your bike they will have it, there is not a lock in the world that a 7lb axe wont go through and 3 lads can load any bike into a van. Its a real shame and I would love just 30 seconds with the twats who try to steal my baby.
