89 tenere problem

hey all
have bought an 89 tenere in South America and was having a problem with alot of oil spilling out of a breather/discharge? hose that trails down to the rear wheel. The mechanic here has rerouted the hose upwards under the tank and popped an oil filter onto the end. Is this correct?

From what I can work out alot of previous alterations/hatchet jobs/crimes have been made/commited against this bike (long list) The entire air flow filter box being removed and replaced by 2 small air filters right at the carbs as opposed to the original design of 2 u shaped hoses returning to the airbox above. I want to replace both current filters and was wondering what would be the best option (oil foamed?) Space is very tight here and the two filters currently in place are pretty much crushed up into each other thus restricting proper air flow. I hope to hit alot of deserts here so any help with choice of filter would be greatly appreciated

thanks all for any help, already just searching here tonight on the hubb I think I might have discovered the answer to the the latest riddle of my forever disappearing oil with no visible trace mystery ( oil tank leaking straight onto exhaust and burning off)
i hope . . !

thanks again

original

I´d install the original air box with original filter. Take out the snorkel and the cover at the rear end and the setup is perfect.

tenere

thanks Auke
unfortunately the option of reinstalling the original airbox system is out of the question for me as it would cost an arm and a leg here (plus huge time). Would you have any idea what the roughly exact amount of oil is needed for an 89 tenere with oil cooler is? Î am being driven demented with this bike trying to work out what oil is required - no dipstick register at all is still resulting in loads of oil being pissed back out the breather tube ( i am doing the 15 minute run before measure)- if needs be I will just drain and measure the oil every few weeks to see where i stand - if the oil cooler system is malfunctioning does it result in these anamolies when attempting to measure oil level???????
any help or information much much appreciated

cheers

black stuff

Summarising your problems:
- No oil shows on dipstick ever
- You keep adding oil to no avail
- Oil keeps coming out of unexpected / undesirable places
- Bike still runs
Please confirm.

Test 1
With the engine idling, unscrew dipstick and look in the oil tank: is oil being returned into the tank, use flashlight if necessary.
If you see oil flowing back into the tank, that's the indication that the return crcuit is functioning.
BTW: I'd be highy surprised if you don't see oil coming back. This would mean your tank empties itself and the oil feed pump would be starved of oil.

Test 2
After your 15 minutes driving, stop the bike, not the engine, and while idling unscrew the dipstick, quickly after stopping. Observe oil level (eye, not dipstick). Let idle for a while and keep observing what happens to oil level. Let us know the results.

Question: do you know anything about the oil pump: was it replaced already, how many km's on the bike, etc.

The hose with the filter at the end, is it the one coming from the engine, just behing the cilinder, diameter approx. 12 mm?
If it is, this is the breather hose which is normally connected to the air filter.

fixed!!

hey Auke
it was the oil cooler all along, completely gunked up and backed up towards its feeder pipe. This pipe exploded spectacularly earlier today sending a litre of oil projecting fifteen feet out and all over some Chilean guys new VW car. He wasnt too happy. I took a taxi out with it aswell. So the oil cooler radiator is removed and the loop closed and all looks sweet. Thanks for your help with this Auke - very informative and much appreciated

cheers

Cheers!

Q: was the 'airside' or the 'oilside' of the cooler gunked up. Hope you mean the airside, otherwise it would be a first that there is so much gunk in the oil circuit that the pipe really gets blocked.
