If the coil works when tested away from the bike
a) Is the coil getting power when it's fitted to the bike?
b) If it is getting power then is it earthing correctly?

ok a)it is getting power
b) i hooked an oscilloscope to my bike and also to an 1982 honda xr200 that runs and the patterns look the same except my bike producing more power while kicking than the honda is while running.

i was reading through the manual and it says it should have around 200v at idle and i was thinking that since it is making 200v while kicking that maybe the stator isn't producing enough amps to fire the coil at slow speeds.
let me know if that sounds possible

finally it starts!!!!!!!!!! i found a stator from an 84 klr65o for $25 shipped. then i took it to work opened up the id a little bit then threw it on the mill and drilled the four mounting hols in the right spot bolted it up and the first kick let out a tremendously loud back fire. think a 12 gauge shot gun in a bed room next kick it fired right up.
thanks for everybody's help

perserverence always pays in the end, glad you've got it going.

Nice post, interesting to learn.

You must be a happy camper now, all you need now is something else to find to fix.

well i currently have a pile of parts i need to replace before i go and ride
and adjust the carb once it gets a little warmer

also if you use header wrap to keep heat off the jug dont start it in your house for the first time.i can say from experience that it smokes a lot.
