Yamaha TT600RE

Hi All ,

Need someone who knows Yam Singles - possibly someone who will do work as a "foreigner" , is that politically correct ? Or a gifted amateur , any recommendations ? Within a reasonable distance of Manchester . Thanks in advance !

Bit of an odd worded post BUT - If we can help you we surely will, however you need to be a little more specific about what the problem is and exactly what you require? If it's advice then you are in the right place.

It looks like your English isn't great but please don't be put off posting here - don't worry about spelling.

The Yamaha TT600RE is a bit of a rarity these days. Not many were ever sold in the UK. I always view the TT600 as an upmarket (deluxe/premium/upmarket) Yamaha XT600E. Same bulletproof engine (more or less) as it's sister XT600 series of bikes. It's a great buy and will give you excellent service. Condition is the main consideration. Tell us more about the bike and if you can post a few pics....

I have always fancied getting one myself. Trouble is, not many minters left. Most have been ridden to destruction and most that survive aren't looking loved and cared for. Pity really cos it was/is such a good bike.

Mechanic

Hi ,
I'm just looking for a decent mechanic or someone with a good knowledge of Yam singles to regularly service and tune my bike . The mechanic that I've been taking it to has had numerous attempts at getting the carburation right , with little success - it still stutters , pops and bangs at low speeds on a steady throttle . I've also returned the bike to stock . Basically I want someone to set up the carbs properly - I really don't like messing with carbs - to many little bit's !

PS : It's a TT600RE with WR 400 Forks and the TT600R rear Ohlins - I will try and post a few pic's but I am both a mechanical and computer numpty !

Nothing wrong with you're English after all, sorry for suggesting otherwise.

What you need is someone local to the MANCHESTER area with a knowledge of servicing XT's.

If you were down South I could have put you in touch with a couple of TRUSTWORTHY home mechanics all of whom are amateur's with an interest in XT's. They do the work through their love of bikes and helping other bikers, not for the dosh.

My best mate (and oldest mate) restores old bikes as a hobby and what he doesn't know about bikes isn't worth knowing. I trust him implicitly. I have had a good few bad experiences with so called professional mechanics and refuse to let them near my bikes now.

Setting up the XT carb(s) is pretty straightforward for someone who knows what they are doing. Then again, it might NOT be a carb problem????? (airbox/filter springs to mind).

Thanks Neil - although quite a few people have found me difficult to communicate with , ex-wife and ex girlfriends mostly !

Yes it's exactly as you said - I need someone like you best mate or a decent home mechanic with an interest in and knowledge of the XT/TT motor.

I have also had bad experiences with so called mechanics who I have paid good money to for poor results - example : recent service - I provided the consummables and when I checked the plug had not been changed ! When I asked the mechanic he said he had forgot but did'nt offer to give me the plug I supplied back ! Oh and the bike was running lean and had become difficult to start .

I may wait until the winter (in a fortnights time?! )and take it to Dave Lambeth in Lincolnshire , but I'd prefer to deal with someone a bit more local .

Are you sure it is running lean? I ask because I've noticed a trend on several different forums about these XT600(TT's also) sputtering and acting goofy at low rpms and at steady throttle, mine included. But most are actually running rich. Mine I have to make my own jets just so I can get it leaner,I even have the vacuum nozzle on the left intake boot open so more air can get in, plus my mixture screw is turned in closed. All this has made it finally run much better. Unless it backfires when letting off the throttle or the plug is white I would guess it is rich. Something tells me the gas nowadays is different and it doesn't require as much as when the bikes were designed.

It is hard to find good mechanics these days, most are just interested in keyboard tapping and out the door.

Hi ,

No the plug was definitely white - I've got a spare set of carbs to try when I get back from hols , someone on another forum mentioned that bikes sent to different countries may have different jets fitted , I have'nt checked this out yet .

Yup your right - what I would like is an old school mechanic who can fix and repair stuff instead of just replacing .
