3AJ Starting Problem

I have an xt 600 tenere 3aj.When i start the engine it will fire up and then stop it will do this 5 or 6 times before it will run.I found the fuel pump in the top box of the bike I have replaced this but it makes no difference.Can I test the pump? Do I need the fuel pump? any suggestions? cheers

no, you don't need the fuel pump.
first check the choke assy, especially the cable. make sure the choke piston is pulled out completly when starting cold engine.
i advise to change the cable-operated choke assy against one from 2KF/2NF/3TB/4PT/DJ02 (XT600 '87 -> )
check / clean carb.
if necessary, adjust idle-mix screw.
mount a fuel filter.
