3AJ starter clutch

Hi Folks and help!
For the last few days riding I've had a nasty grinding/whining sound when starting the engine. I took the bike to a mechanic, he says this part is buggered:

I'm waiting for a call back to see if he can source the part in Chile but I'm probably going to have to order it myself and have it sent out by courier.

I've found the part here:
1992 Yamaha XT600 OEM Starter Clutch Parts | MotoSport
but they don't have the 3AJ Tenere listed. Is this part going to fit my bike? Are all XTs pretty much the same?

Thanks,
Dunc.

Thats the spragg clutch.....not what I think would normally go on your bike and the parts the link gave is for the starter motor.....normally the starter motor brushes go.....should fit yours ok.....

Hi Dunch,

I have a 3AJ Tenere and my wife has a 1991 3TB XT600E.
I have worked on both of their engines and am sure that their starter clutches are different, and don't think that these parts can be swapped between our bikes.

From memory, the one way rollers grab the crank shaft behind the rotor and this area of the crank is different between the models, preventing using the (i'm told better) later parts. If it is used for too long with worn one way rollers, this area of the crank could be damaged.

If I were you I would check carefully if what you are being offered is listed for a 3TB, and if it is I doubt it will fit your 3AJ,, Sorry.

I think you also need to have a good look at that area of the crank shaft.

BTY, you need to scroll down the parts diagram to see the relevent bits.

Good luck

Mark

Cheers folks. Thanks to the guys on The Tenere Forum and a certain Mr Lambeth I've managed to identify the parts I need (1VJ/3AJ if anyone's interested) now it's just a case of finding them and ordering.
Looks like I'm going to be in Chile for at least another couple of weeks, not that there's anything wrong with Arica, I'd just rather be riding.

Dunc.
