1985 XT600 Tenere downpipes ???

I have a 1985 XT600 Tenere that is in need of new downpipes. Now please excuse my naivety, but is the engine the same as a 1985 XT600. I can find new S/S downpipes for a 1985 Xt600, will these fit on my Tenere?

XT Headers

Steve, I think they're all the same: a mate fitted an old set of XT600E pipes to his v early 1983 43F without any problems. Pretty sure the MOTAD stainless pipes fit all XT600s, as do the Supertrapp ones sold by KEDO in Germany. People seem to recommend KEDO's own 2 piece stainless pipes as the best ones out there, but they've none in stock. I know, cos I've tried to order a set recently. Take a look at their on line catalogue, and pester them to do a production run!

When I ordered my Kedo ones they werent in stock, but they got them in a matter of days.

One note tho' They have a big ass weld inside the pipe where it mounts on the cylinder. Grind it down to get more flow. But dont expect instant wheelies just because of a new downpipe, it does next to nothing alone.

I like your footpegs btw, I bought some following a recommenation on this site - much better than the tiny standard ones on my 1VJ.

Thanks for the advice Chaps, very helpful.
One last thing, do you know what length the studs are? I'm gonna have to order some at the same time as the downpipes as I use the bike everyday to get to work so it needs to be done (hopefully) over a weekend with no hassles.

Sorry for my English.. Studs, as in the threaded "bolts" which the downpipes mount to at the cylinder? Not sure, but I know Kedo sell 'em aswell. They sell both the studs, the nuts, and the gaskets

I know the problem! Genuine Yamaha ones aren't expensive - I happen to have a spare set, with nuts in my 'useful bits' box that I bought recently ready for the same job when I bought some suspension bushes. They are 38mm overall, with about 3mm unthreaded centre section. Yam Part No: 90116-06503 (note this is a new number, probably from another, more recent model rather than the one listed in parts lists). They are £1.58 each plus VAT. The nuts are part no 90179-06499, again a new number, and £1.89 plus VAT. I get my parts from Fowlers in Bristol (surprising I know, cos they don't have a great rep for selling bikes. Their parts dept however is really helpful and efficient). I see you're in Wiltshire too - I live just outside Westbury. Happy to lend a hand/large hammer with XT fettling if you're reasonably nearby, or just meet up for a

You wont have a problem with the header pipes fitting, the problem may come where the expansion and or baffle/ tail pipe fit. Some of the later header pipes are longer / shorter depending on model. The difference is only an inch or so, but can render your existing tail pipe section useless if it's on the short side.

guzzibob, thanks for the info. I have just ordered all the bits I need from Wemoto so hopefully all will go well. If anything needs "adjusting" it shouldn't be too bad, I'm a fabricator/welder by trade and my current employment is as a maintenance engineer so I have fully equiped workshop at work. Devizes so not too far ;-)

Same here, when i asked they said there was none in stock but to check back in a week or two and sure enough when i did they sent me a set out.

I think they knock up a batch when they get inquiries.

yep any xt 6 headers will do. If your exhaust studs snap off when you try to undo them its engine out minimum as i found out, and thus not an afternoon job.
I run the exhaust headers till pinholes start to form in the rust at the front. you can then wrap them in exhaust tape for further mileage.

DONT get the motad ones, I did and sent them straight back, bits of bent pipes welded together.
the KEDO ones were out of stock a few weeks ago.
try EBAY.DE. Germany, got some exactly the same as kedo, as MEZO said, they are called Devil pipes, excellent quality, 2 day delivery and 18 euro postage, quicker than most uk suppliers, even came with gaskets.
