3AJ Bearing Sizes
 

Hi there,

I am looking to buy spare bearings for a long trip, but do not want to replace the current bearings yet. Yamaha ask excessive prices for geniune parts, so I was thinking to go to a local SKF dealer to get the bearings for my bike.

The problem is I do not know what size the bearings are. I am thinking of carrying spare bearings for the front wheel, rear wheel, steering head, and maybe rear suspension linkage. I do not want to disassemble the bike to find out the dimensions.

The only dimensions I have found were on this forum: The steering head bearings are 'upper bearing is 25x47x15 and the lower bearing is 30x55x17' according to socks.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the other bearings, or could you direct me to the right place to look?

Bearing front wheel is 14dollars, cant complain on the price and dont think SKF is any cheaper?

I'm in Berlin right now. I was quoted 35 euros for the front bearings and seals, seem to be missing the rear wheel quote right now, but I imagine it would be a little more expensive given there are three bearings there. Both steering bearings plus seal came to 140 euros. So that's at least 200 euros to get the bearings from the dealer, or $270, and that wouldn't include the rear suspension. If I can save half of that, it'll be worth my time.

I know I can go to a bike store and get the steering bearings for half of what the dealer asked, and probably with a bit more wandering around find third party wheel bearings too. Or there's the like of AllBalls (although ordering online would be tough). But I would rather know what I am buying, and be certain that the bearings are coming from a reputable manufacturer.

Order from US, steering bearing original is only 18 dollar a piece..

Change bearings before you leave, and you shouldn't get any troubles with'em

The Tenere parts fiche (thanks mezo) does not indicate exact bearing numbers. But the one from Moto-andalucia does, it's just very difficult to read. And the two parts fiches don't entirely agree.

So I have looked through the parts books for the later model XTs and found (for the 1990 and 1996):

XT600E bearings:
Front Wheel:
Two bearings of type B6202. (Part #93306-20209)
One oil seal 20-35-5.
One dust seal.

Rear Wheel:
Two bearings of type B6203DU (part #93306-20310)
One bearing B6304RS (part #93306-30416)
One oil seal FPJ 25-44-8 TS
One oil seal SD 50-32-8-1 (not specified for the 1996 model)

Now, I can see the main designations of the bearings in the part numbers, so extrapolating and looking at the 3AJ parts fiche:

Front wheel: 2 x B6202 bearings, oil seal SD25-35-5
Rear wheel:
2 x B6203DU bearings, FPJ-24-44-8 TS oil seal. Other parts fiche indicates a 6303 bearing (from part number). I am more inclined to believe the former as (A) it's positively indicated in the manual (not inferred) and (B) it is the same as the other XT600's
1 x B6304RS bearing, SD-30-32-8-1 oil seal

Regarding the sealing designations - the parts manual does not call for sealed bearings on the front wheel. Does anyone know a good reason why I should not replace the bearings with sealed ones? Why I should use single sealed RS or DU bearings as opposed to 2RS or DDU? I would not expect the friction of the seal to significantly affect the performance of the bike; does Yamaha use unsealed / single sealed bearings because of economics?

Front is new number 20205 size: outside 35,06mm 11,07mm inside 14,85mm

20310: outside 40mm, 11,93mm, inside 16,95mm

I use NSK bearings Mez.... I'll see if I can sort out any numbers

Thanks for the help. I have gone ahead and bought the bearings, I ended up with CX bearings from Poland. Not sure about this one, I think I may trust people behind the counter a little too much. Which is why I'll wait until it's necessary before changing them. I'll post here with any problems or confirmation after the change (just in case someone else with a similar question comes across this thread)
