3AJ + Arrow --> Re-jetting?

Hello & Greetings from Finland!

Finally made my dreams come true and bought a 3AJ Italy-import. For some reason 3AJs weren't imported to Finland when new (actually only 34L was seen here) so there's certain lack of knowledge around here when it comes to Ténérés.

Been tinkering a bit with the bike already but haven't ridden it yet (lots of snow & -15'C up here) and been wondering does Arrow Paris-Dakar silencer with Motad pipes require re-jetting of the carbs? All the hints are more than welcome!

I have aftermarket headers and the Arrow P-D pipe on my bike (3 mins to fit) and I haven't rejetted it, but I will put it on a dyno in the next 2 weeks. Do you want me to post pics of the pipe? I will put the dyno graph up ASAP.

No need for pipe pics; I already have both silencer and header pipes waiting in the garage (nothing else to do during cold winter nights than admire the welding seams of Arrow... *sigh*... ;-) ).

Dyno graph would be just great!

I also have an Arrow silencer with Motad headers and have not had to rejet,however,living in Finland(cold weather and altitude)you may want to check with them here.

The pipe sounds great and has made my 3AJ much nicer to ride (dunno about more power though). I'm confident that it will last for years, and is much better for overlanding than the rubbish OEM item (complete with mild steel and giant collector box!)

One thing though - mine is getting *louder*! A mechanic friend said that my blipping of the throttle at every opportunity was probably blowing the sound-absorbent fibres out of the end, and it may need repacking every couple of years (when there's no packing left and it's a straight through!)

I love it - the best single change I've made to my bike, and I know DL recommends them above the Lazer item. Enjoy!

- Well both cold weather (during riding season that is) and high altitudes of Finland are urban legends; summer temps are comparable to those in UK - Specially last summer was most of the time around +22.. 25'C (yes, and 1st time in 20 years I didn't have a bike so it was pure torture...) and the scenery isn't filled with mountains either.

Btw whats the weather like in August,cos I'll be passing through about then.

- Ah, August... Daily temps can rech well over +20'C but a bit chillier during the nights (no midnight sun anymore in August).

Hi Guys, there was a mention by someone above about having to repack the silencer every couple of years.

I have a friend who manufactures his own exhausts for a living and he will tell you that the packing in a scilencer will get blown out in a very short space of time. The system on a typical big single ridden every day might last six months. (he has seen the system on a SP1 race bike only last a couple of races!!) - by the way you will loose the fibres from around the middle of the pipe first.

Now when he repacks my Micron pipe he first wraps a sheet of very fine stainless wire mesh around the inner perforated pipe, then lays the fibre over this. It dosen't make any difference to the performance of the pipe, just makes it harder for the fibres to get sucked out, and of course this makes it last longer. Perhaps about 18 months ?

He picked up this tip after seeing it used in the World Superbikes. - Its worth asking about if your going to get a pipe repacked.

Excellent tip - thanks very much!

For the time being I think I will leave it, as I don't mind it being nice and loud. Don't know if my neighbours agree though!

Does the loss of packing material change the efficiency / richness of the engine mixture at all? Or is it just the sound that changes?

On another note, I cleaned the bike today - looks like I will need both wheels rebuilt before my trip, just to make sure. The Excel rims (black) will be used for safety...
