Hi hi! This is the start of fixing my '84 Tenere, there's a list of stuff that needs to be done - going to start with the essentials and work on it over the next year til it's looking brand new! I bought the bike in Africa, rode the shit out of it and it just about got me back home to Ireland! Plan on heading away again in start of 2012 so got little over a year to make her sweet again, going to focus on the essentials first as I'll be using the bike daily (once it's running again!) and maybe finish with a paint job before I go!
Will post photos in a few days but here's some info on what's going to be done:
What other mods would people suggest? Going to post this to a few forums for the most feedback, I don't have a lot of technical know-how yet but I've read a good few rebuild threads now so I guess just start taking it apart and work it out from there! |

Saw you posting on the other channel, im sure you will be hearing all about Dave Lambeth in the coming weeks, also known on most forums as the "Guru". If you wanting leccy start you will need to change the engine to a later model, but i would keep the bike as original as possible if i was you. Here are my 34L`s getting ready for restoration. ![]() ![]() Mezo.

Thanks for the tips, here's some pics of what I've got in the house at the moment, the rest of it is is in my folks' back garden - have to take it apart and bring it in piece by piece so my flatmates don't notice me sneaking it into the house!
Nice build up of dirt here... ![]() Intake cracked, not all the way through yet but will have to be replaced. ![]() Cylinder is smooth to the touch but rust spots appeared on it today! (I took it apart in the rain last night). What should I do about this? ![]() Thread on cam chain tensioner gone. Would it be possible to tap this? Don't really want to buy a new one... ![]() First things first is give all this a good clean. Got the engine block with me but must try and arrange a lift to pick up the rest of the bike in a few days. What would ye recommend for cleaning the inside of the engine and the outside? (I haven't done this before!) |

I'll bet that a helicoil for that cam tensioner would cost more than a good second had replacement part: try EBay/email one of the guys breaking XTs -eg enduro spares, they're bound to have one.
A mate fitted a Vaportech display to his Gas Gas - only about 70 quid and loads of functions to play with incl a temp gauge if you can sort out a sensor - probably a good idea for an overlander heading south Wheel rims: if yours are anything like the Tagasos(?) on my 1VJ you'll find them pretty rough on the inside, especially the rear. Also, many of the spoke nipples are seized, and as I want to be able to retension loose ones on the road, I ordered a pair of MORAD Spanish rims from Central Wheel at the NEC in Nov. They don't stock 2.50 section rear rims tho' so I've got one on order - due in mid Jan. So if you're considering new rims and want standard width rather than the motoX/Enduro standard 2.15, plan ahead. Enjoy the rebuild! Standard paint or custom? |

There are stacks of spares in Germany, there's one on there complete with a cam chain as well right now. Mezo.

Id certainly take out your valves & have a look at the seats (remember where each valve came from) at the same time replace your valve stem oil seals, that may be why you have oil there? the seals come as part of a gasket kit.
