2006 xt600e Engine noise at idle (with sample)

G'Day all!

I have a feeling I might be being a little paranoid but I have a 'clunking' coming from my engine. The location really eludes me even after using a screwdriver stethoscope. There are no other symptoms other than this noise which is most noticeable at idle.

- Serviced 2 days ago with MOT
- Only 9000 miles
- Had been garaged for 9months prior to service
- Idle is set at about 1500
- 'Clunking' at idle.
- Clunking doesn't disappear when engine is under strain.
- Noise may be there at higher rpm but not as clear (if at all).

I know they are naturally noisy engines anyway so I am probably being overly paranoid, I just haven't noticed it as badly as this before.

My thoughts are either a loose cam-chain or the bike is struggling to idle and fuel/air ration needs adjusting. If you could have a listen to the mp3 I have uploaded I would appreciate it, the bike has been warmed up. You can the the noise best at around 1min 5 seconds.

I would rather have people laugh at me for me for being paranoid than have something go wrong!

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Or the crankshaft gear nut...

Jens Eskildsen 18 Jul 2011 17:42

Make sure you check the valves

VetsTail 18 Jul 2011 18:16

Valves all seem to be fine. I am waiting for gaskets to come through so I can have a peek but from what I have been reading the most likely thing seems to be one of the following (which I can check at the same time):

- Crankshaft gear nut
- Balancer nut
- Clutch nut

I don't suppose anyone knows the size socket needed for the crank nut?

Quick update:

Problem seems to be a loose balancer nut. I will be taking photo's of the process for anyone that has issues with the later models of XT600e as it isn't quite the same as the service manual with the clutch on the other side.

STOP!

Get the service manual for the Yamaha Raptor 660 ATV!
It's about 95% the same as your engine (on that side)

You're a god send! Luckily at this stage nothing is overly complicated so I haven't had a chance to screw things up. Working off a parts diagram wasn't ideal though :P

I panicked a little when I saw the older xt service manual had a little ball bearing to worry about after I had already popped the casing off.

very interested to hear the results

VetsTail. my xt550 is doing the same thing.

your sound clip sounds oh too familiar.

check mine here XT550 - persisting knock - YouTube

its been doing this for a bout 6 months now and i did have the rhs cover off and did a quick inspection of the balancer gear nut and crankshaft nut but nothing seemed too loose.

would be really interested in hearing what you found in yours and what was required to fix it. would like to advoid splitting the cases and measuring all tollerances if I can.

Thanks.
