1VJ Electircal fault

I have just bought an imported 1vj from a dealer in york.

I ran it for a month or so before christmas and it was fine.

I have have just come to use the bike again after a month off and the the electics have gone mad.

I can kick start the bike just fine. It runs and seems perfectly happy. BUT all the other electrics dont work. I have no lights, indicators, engine start, horn etc.

How can this be?

Does anyone out there have any ideas? I thought it may be the ignition switch but the diagrams in my clymer manual dont match the connections on my switch.

The only thing I seem to be able to find out is that I have 12v going into the red wire when the ignition switch is off, but as soon I turn it on I lose the voltage altogether.

This makes diagnosis rather hard!!

Any Ideas?

in most cases the solution is simple:
clean the battery terminals.
use battery pole grease to prevent corrosion.
if this doesn't help, connect the bike to a car battery.
if this helps, buy a new battery.
if battery is definitly o.k., ask again.
here you can find a wiring diagramm:

dave is this the same 1vj you are trying to sell ?

Yep!

Sods law eh. I havn't run the bike for a month or so and this morning when I tried to start it I got bugger all until I kicked it over when, as usual, it started first kick.

I rode it around to a mates house thinking it might be the battery, but it wasn't.

Rode it back home OK but I'm just waiting for some suggestions before I go any further.

At least stopping the garage is better than in the middle of the desert! but I'm still a bit pissed.....

It looks like the sale is off for a while!

Sorry!

Dave

Ok, thanks for the comments Klaus, I spoke to David Lambeth on the phone. He suggested the problem was a sticking circuit breaker. He was right! The bike runs perfectly with a 15a fuse in place of the breaker, just a question of ordering a new one.

Phew!

Bikes sweet as ever and for sale again!

who's robert thompson then?
Is this a real person Dave or an internet pseudonym?

davidlomax 4 Mar 2003 00:25

Rob Thompson is the name of the bloke whose house I was at when I discovered that it wasnt just a flat battery.

I kicked the bike over and didnt want to a. stop it ( in case it didnt go again ) and b. waste any time,

so I gave him the address of this site and told him to post the details,

Most of the post is correct but its obviously shakey because he's not a biker.

Not a bad effort tho' really!

End of an unhappy post hopefully!!

Dave
