1vj carb idle settings/adjustment
hi ive finally got my 1vj tenere xt 600 starting pretty well as she was running incredibly weak.richened up and shes much better.

my prob now is, when the engine is warm and i turn of the choke the idle speed is so low it stalls very quickly. i then wound the knurled knob up on the throttle cable linkage on the carb.i had to turn it a lot and then she idles....but... when i then rev up a bit the idle sticks up high and i have to stick her in gear and open the clutch a little to drag the engine speed back down.rev up again and problem happens again.

ive now got it so the revs dont really stick up often but she barely idles.
i guess by turning the throttle linkage screw up so much im causeing all these problems so....is there another idle speed adjustment somewhere?

Idle speed is normally set by a screw on the side or bottom of the carb, and then the cable is adjusted so it has a small amount of slack. This means that when you shut off the throttle it shuts properly, and doesn't carry on idling at a high speed like yours is doing.

Slacken off the throttle cable, adjust the idle speed screw to get a nice even idle when warm, and then adjust the cable so that there is a perceptible bit of slack before the cable starts to act. There's only one thing worse than a sloppy throttle cable, and that's one that's too tight

That's the theory. Someone else will be along with a diagram showing the exact location of the idle speed screw, I'm sure.

On mine (1995 XT600E) it is on the left side of the carbs, next to the choke button, just above the float chambers. Look for a brass knurled knob pointing down and slightly forwards, with a spring around it to prevent it shaking loose. Yours may not be the same, but will be a similar arrangement.

Make sure the engine is warm before adjusting. Clockwise to increase idle speed, anti-clockwise to reduce. My manual gives the idle speed as 1200 - 1400 rpm, but without a rev counter I just guess it. Once that is done, throttle cable free play shold measure 3-5 mm at the throttle grip. As I said above, no slack is worse than too much slack.

well, i have had a good look at my "spare set of ivj carbs and the only screw that is apparent on the carbs is the mixture one underneath.there is nothing on the sides ,top or bottom. im dumbfounded.
someone must know???

Not a great idea. If the cable snags or sticks, you have a runaway bike.
